National Study: VETERANS POST TRAUMATIC STRESS & MEDICAL CANNABIS

“Cannabis in not an entrance drug – it is an exit drug from [pharmaceutical] narcotics.”

– Dr. Uma Dhanabalan

Medical Cannabis Works Better for Women Than Men

Dr. Rebecca Craft hasgood news for female medical marijuana patients: the plant’s effectiveness in treating pain is notably higher in women. Craft, a Psychology professor and researcher at Washington State University, says that the existence ofestrogen explainsthis differenceestrogen.

Of course, it’s not all good news. Higher estrogen levels also leave women more sensitive to some of the negative side effects.Craft highlights much more potent marijuana as a catalyst for the study.

“Marijuana is very different than it was 40 years ago,” she said. “It’s much higher in THC and lower in cannabidiol (CBD), so a little bit goes a very long way.”

Could a 'sniff test' lead to early autism diagnosis?

A new study published in the journal Current Biology has identified differences in the way people with autism respond to smells, suggesting a "sniff test" could be used for early diagnosis of the condition.

Researchers say a 'sniff test' may be a feasible way to diagnose autism early, after finding children with the disorder have different sniff responses to those without autism.

Think of a pleasant smell - a bunch of flowers, for example. You would likely take a big sniff in order to inhale the floral aroma. When it comes to bad smell, however, you would restrict the airflow in your nose to avoid inhaling it.

Cannabis and compromises

In 2012 Colorado voters legalized the sale and consumption of marijuana for recreational purposes. Some ski towns have embraced marijuana, treating it little differently than alcohol. But others have been biding their time.

To Vail and other towns, cannabis use by visitors and residents is an undeniable reality. But that doesn't mean they will allow stores selling THC-infused products.

Here in Canada recreational marijuana use is still illegal though access to medical marijuana has been completely reinvented. This has come with its own headache.

'Legal highs bill' puts medical research at risk

New treatments for depression and experiments which might help explain human consciousness will be put at risk if the bill banning legal highs is passed, researchers have warned.

In an open letter to Theresa May, leading British scientists urged the home secretary to add an exemption for "research pharmaceuticals being used to develop new medicines or progress neuroscience research", so that new treatments and experiments were not brought to a halt by the bill.

What effect does marijuana really have on weight gain?

While cannabis alters the functions of neurobiological circuits controlling appetite, its effect on weight gain is complex since several factors appear to be involved, says Didier Jutras-Aswad, University of Montreal professor and researcher at the CHUM Research Centre. "It is known -- and often reported by users -- that cannabis causes temporary increase in appetite. As to whether it actually causes weight gain in the long term, the available data is limited. The question is all the more difficult to answer since many other factors can influence weight. For instance, cannabis use may be associated with cigarette smoking, which also alters appetite, and many effects of cannabis vary by gender and level of use.

We Need More Research On Medical Marijuana

A new study revealed that there was “moderate-quality evidence” to support the use of cannabinoid compounds for the treatment of chronic pain and spasticity. The same report also found that there was “lower-quality evidence” suggesting that cannabinoids were associated with improvements in nausea and vomiting chemotherapy, sleep disorders and Tourette syndrome.

Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), a peer-reviewed medical produced by the American Medical Association (AMA), the analysis reviewed 79 trials that fit the criteria for assessment. These studies included 6,462 participants.

New Zealand: work on medicinal cannabis bill underway

Moves are afoot to allow the use of medicinal cannabis following the death of Nelson teenager Alex Renton who was undergoing experimental treatment using the product.

The 19-year-old died peacefully in Wellington Hospital last night where he was receiving a treatment of Elixinol, which is derived from hemp rather than marijuana, for a condition which caused him to suffer repeated seizures.

Alex's family applied to Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne to be able to import and use the product and was granted a one-off dispensation on compassionate grounds.
