Israelis allowed cannabis as prescription drug

Deputy Minister of Health Yakov Litzman said the drug will be available in pharmacies.

Deputy Minister of Health Yakov Litzman today announced that medical cannabis will be available in pharmacies in Israel, and that more doctors would be allowed to prescribe it.

"There are already pharmacies that dispense all sorts of other drugs, such as morphine. There is order with that, and there will be order with this," Litzman said. "There will be registration, and we'll supervise it, but it will be according to a standard, like a drug. Right now, we're in a case at the High Court of Justice because of the growers, and we'll issue a tender for the growers. I hope we get approval from the High Court of Justice."

Canada: Medical marijuana to be covered by benefits soon, experts say

Canadians who have been prescribed medical marijuana could one day see their insurance company footing the bill, experts predict, following the introduction of new Health Canada rules that allow for the sale of cannabis oils.

Health Canada announced revamped medical marijuana regulations earlier this month after the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that users of the drug should be permitted to consume it in other forms, such as oils and edibles, rather than having to smoke dried buds."You're going to see insurance companies slowly start to creep into the sector," says Khurram Malik, an analyst at Jacob Securities Inc., noting that the new regulations will allow medical marijuana producers to sell gel caps similar to those made from cod liver oil.

Israel: Medical Marijuana to be Available at Pharmacies

Israelis soon will be able to take a doctor’s prescription for marijuana to the local pharmacy, Deputy Health Minister Yaakov Litzman said Monday.

He noted that pharmacies issue prescriptions for other drugs that are considered narcotics and that procedures are well-supervised. A case in point is Ritalin. A person wanting to fill a prescription for the drug, which when ground up and sniffed can be extremely dangerous, has to wait at the counter until the pharmacist opens the safe.

“I will fight an aggressive war not to allow this to get out of control,” said Litzman, who in effect is the Health Minster, a title he does not accept because the Hareidi Yehadut Torah (United Torah Judaism) party does not want to be part of a “Zionist” Cabinet.

Edmonton: Legal marijuana users left scrambling after local supplier raided by police

EDMONTON - More than 1,000 people with health problems ranging from cancer to chronic pain are without their legal medicine after a Beverly area marijuana shop was raided Wednesday by police.

The non-profit Mobile Access Compassionate Resources Organization Society, or MACROS, had been illegally supplying marijuana to users with a Health Canada medical marijuana licence or a prescription from their doctor for 11 years without any issues, society president Aaron Bott said.

His clients range from the homeless to the wealthy across Alberta and throughout Canada.

New Zealand: 'Let's get this country green'

Medicinal cannabis: 'Let's get this country green'

We asked Stuff Nation members to share their views on whether cannabis should be legalised for medicinal use. This is Michael Doran's view on the matter.

I have been a drug addict for the past 30 years and clean for about three years.

The one constant drug that I have used and will continue to use for migraines, depression and insomnia is cannabis.

I have tried different prescribed medicines and different forms of therapy, but the best solution has been to self-medicate with cannabis. Unfortunately, that means breaking the law by having to buy it off people who are themselves trying to sell enough so they can afford to smoke a bit of it themselves.

Australia: Medical cannabis trial: First details revealed

Thirty terminally ill people being cared for by Newcastle's Calvary Mater Hospital will take part in a new trial of medical cannabis, the government announced on Monday.

University of NSW researchers will work with the hospital patients to examine what effects vapourised cannabis leaves and a form of pharmaceutical cannabis medication will have on people who are dying of cancer and suffering symptoms including fatigue, nausea and insomnia.

Premier Mike Baird and Minister for Medical Research Pru Goward announced on Monday that the trial would be undertaken by palliative care specialist Meera Agar, who is also a conjoint associate professor at the University of NSW.

Medical Marijuana: weighing benefits versus risks

Statistics show that prescription drugs are abused so readily in the United States that someone dies of an overdose from pills every 19 minutes.

In contrast, there is a drug that has never been known as the sole cause of an overdose death, and yet remains illegal in South Dakota and many other American states. That drug is marijuana, which is considered by the federal government as a Schedule I drug, meaning it has no medical value whatsoever.

But opinions on the medical value of marijuana are changing in America, and proponents of legalizing marijuana for medical use in South Dakota hope the state can join 23 other states and the District of Columbia where it is legal, and they're pushing for a November 2016 statewide ballot measure to accomplish that.

Cannabis species and cannabinoid concentration preference among sleep-disturbed medicinal cannabis users

Introduction

Individuals report using cannabis for the promotion of sleep, and the effects of cannabis on sleep may vary by cannabis species. Little research has documented preferences for particular cannabis types or cannabinoid concentrations as a function of use for sleep disturbances.

Highlights

•Individuals using cannabis to manage nightmares preferred sativa to indica.

•Sativa users were less likely than indica users to endorse cannabis dependence.

•Insomnia and greater sleep latency are associated with using higher CBD cannabis.

•Weekly hypnotic medication use is associated with using cannabis with lower THC.

The great weed experiment

In recent months the debate around medical marijuana has come to the fore with anecdotal evidence suggesting it should be legalised but what is the actual science behind it? Charles Anderson reports.

The second bathroom drawer down is a pile of painkillers. There are packets and boxes. There is neurontin, a nerve pain medicine, that in the words of its owner "doesn't work". There is morphine and tramadol, that "don't work".

There are hundreds of different products that have been trialled and tested, made legal and brought to the pharmaceutical market on the back of clear evidential success.

"None of which work as well as my medical pot."
