The People’s Medicine: How Legalization Improves America’s Healthcare

In the heart of Denver, the newly-minted marijuana capital of America, doctors from around the nation bared unseasonable late-summer frost to attend the Marijuana for Medical Professionals Conference. The event targeted medical professionals with one thing in common—a desire to know more about cannabis medicines as the substance is propelled out of the realms of early 20th-century “reefer madness” and into popular use as a highly-lucrative, 21st-century panacea.

Months after marijuana holds, Post tests find pesticides in products

Nearly six months after the city of Denver began a crackdown on unapproved pesticides in marijuana products, a spot-check by The Denver Post found that the chemicals were still being sold to consumers.

Eight lab tests commissioned by The Post on recreational marijuana extracts purchased at two shops found most contained no pesticides that are not approved by the Colorado Department of Agriculture.

But two tests on concentrated marijuana products sold at one store found levels of three pesticides the state says cannot be used to grow marijuana. Both items were manufactured by Mahatma Concentrates in Denver, which made its extracts from raw marijuana grown by Treatments Unlimited, which operates the Altitude shops in Denver.

Tourists can now purchase medical marijuana in Las Vegas -- is recreational next?

It's been 15 years since Nevada voters approved a ballot measure legalizing medical marijuana in the state, but it wasn't until August 24 that the first dispensary opened its doors in Clark County.

"We've been so busy, there are lines around the corner at some times of the day," said Euphoria Wellness Managing Director Darlene Purdy.

Located in southwest Las Vegas, the dispensary has seen more than 100 patients per day, according to Purdy, some of whom have been emotional about finally being able to purchase their medicine legally.

"Patients are so happy," Purdy said. "Some people have been waiting 15 years for this."

Some Ontario Doctors Cancelling Out-Of-Province Cannabis Documents

Some out-of-province patients accessing the MMPR via telemedicine clinics in Ontario are being told they will no longer be able to use these clinics.

In the past few weeks, Lift has recently begun hearing from patients who live outside Ontario and have accessed or attempted to access a medical document for medical cannabis (re: prescription) using telemedicine from a doctor in Ontario, only to be denied. The reasoning behind this change remains unclear. Some clinics have blamed Health Canada, but Health Canada has publicly issued no such rule at this time.

One such patient, Chase, 27 of Saskatoon, told us that he recently received a call from his clinic in Ontario informing him that the doctor will no longer be evaluating out of province patients.

Marijuana plant

What Is Medical Marijuana?

Medical marijuana is any part of the marijuana plant that you use to treat health problems. People use it to get relief from their symptoms, not to try to get high.

Most marijuana that's sold legally as medicine has the same ingredients as the kind that people use for pleasure. But some medical marijuana is specially grown to have less of the chemicals that cause feelings of euphoria.

ALS survivor says marijuana saved her, fights to legalize it

Bob and Cathy Jordan say her ALS is relieved by medical marijuana, and are supporters of legalizing it in Florida.(Photo: WTSP)

PARRISH, Fla. -- When you pull up to the home of Bob and Cathy Jordan and see a FLCAN sign, you know exactly what they stand for.

"We're flat out legalization but regulate," said Bob.

Cathy has Lou Gehrig's disease or ALS. It's deadly and there's no known cure. But, she is a 30-year survivor of it. The married couple of 33 years attributes that to marijuana.

"It's a horrible disease, I think it's the worst disease out there," Bob said.

"She goes 10 days without cannabis, at the most 10 days, her twitching comes back, she starts drooling."
