Drug curbs marijuana use, but with tough side effects

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] -- Combining the drug topiramate with psychological counseling curbed marijuana use among young smokers significantly more than did counseling alone, according to newly published results of a small randomized, controlled trial at Brown University. The results come with a caveat, however: many study volunteers couldn't tolerate the medicine's side effects.

There is no FDA-approved medication for treating cannabis dependence and misuse. Meanwhile, the benefits of counseling treatment, such as motivational enhancement therapy (MET), aren't enough to help many patients, said Robert Miranda Jr., associate professor (research) of psychiatry and human behavior in the Alpert Medical School.

Medical marijuana soon available through pharmacies in Israel

Israel’s medical marijuana program kicks into high gear.

Medical marijuana will soon be available in Israel pharmacies in the form of pre-rolled cigarettes, cookies and oils, as reported by The Times of Israel.

The number of prescribing doctors and farmers allowed to cultivate marijuana will also rise substantially, according to an Israel Health Ministry reform.

Currently patients must wait months to get a marijuana prescription because there are only 36 doctors in the country who are permitted to prescribe the drug, as The Times of Israel reported.

Utah Medical marijuana gets another shot

SALT LAKE CITY — When Malinda Heiner was 16 months old, a 53-minute seizure changed the course of her life forever.

Malinda's brain suffered so much damage that she hasn't stopped seizing since.

Now 14 years old, Malinda has 30 to 40 seizures a day. She's confined to a wheelchair, not speaking, not communicating, but seizing all the time.

Medicine has only caused more issues, says her mother, Melanie Heiner. Instead of stopping Malinda's seizures, they've only disrupted her appetite and sleep.

On Wednesday morning, Heiner, her daughter and about 30 other people stood in the Capitol rotunda and called on lawmakers to take a second look at a bill to legalize medical marijuana.

One Of NY's First Medical Marijuana Patients Speaks

One of the first patients to receive medical marijuana in New York is telling her story.

Brittany Barger, 27, was diagnosed with Stage IV ovarian cancer more than a year ago and said she turned to medical marijuana as a last resort.

“My body hasn’t reacted the way I wanted it to for chemo,” Barger said. “I can’t do surgery because it’s way too dangerous, and if I can come here and get some type of relief, and I feel like this is my choice.”

Barger said she was tired of taking dozens of pills that only made her feel worse and with the help of her doctor, she obtained marijuana capsules at the Vireo Health Dispensary in White Plains last Thursday.

Debunking The Myth That Pot Fries Your Brain

Misleading and scientifically illiterate claims notwithstanding, there's little definitive evidence marijuana makes you dumb, dense, or crazy.

Many Minnesota doctors hesitant on medical marijuana

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - A new survey shows many doctors in Minnesota have been reluctant to accept medical marijuana as a treatment option.

The survey was released Tuesday to the state's Task Force on Medical Cannabis Therapeutic Research. It was conducted by task force member Dr. Charles Reznikoff, who sought opinions on medical marijuana from 262 doctors from four institutions who practice across Minnesota.

the majority of doctors in the survey said qualifying conditions need to be clearer. Many said they don't want to be burdened by the program, are nervous about registering patients and worry about it at a time when so many people are abusing opioids.
