Man dead after taking part in drugs trial in France

A man died in a French hospital on Sunday after taking part in a drug trial for a painkiller based on a compound similar to cannabis.

The Rennes University Hospital announced the death in a statement but did not identify the patient, who had already been in a state of brain death.

He was among six male volunteers between 28 and 49 hospitalised last week after volunteering to take the experimental drug.

French health authorities said three of the hospitalised volunteers face possible brain damage and an investigation is under way into what French health minister Marisol Touraine called "an accident of exceptional gravity".

Etain awaits first patients as medical marijuana is off to slow start

WHITE PLAINS  When medical marijuana became available this month in New York, Brittany Barger was one of the first patients to navigate the state’s rules and make it through a dispensary door.

“When you’re as sick as I am, you’ll try anything,” said Barger, who has ovarian cancer that has spread through her 27-year-old body.

New York’s program — one of the strictest out of the 23 states that allow medical marijuana — has had a widely anticipated slow beginning, but there are signs it’s gaining momentum.

Hazy rules around medical marijuana dispensaries

TORONTO  -

They line up to see God at this dimly-lit emporium in the Church and Wellesley area — and then they go home and smoke it.

Before opening at 11 a.m., Toronto Dispensary operations manager Marina gingerly reaches into a safe and pulls out more than a dozen glass canisters filled with different types of green bud, mainly imported from British Columbia.

Each jar contains different strains of marijuana with funky names — LA Chocolate, Chemo, Purple Paralysis and, of course, the earthy-smelling God — and she places them in glass cabinets that her customers can peruse before purchasing.

The price for a gram is about $10 — or $225 for an ounce.

Illinois Patients Provide Powerful Testimony In Support Of Expanding Medical Marijuana Program

Illinois has a medical marijuana program, which is great for the patients that can participate in the program. However, there are many, many patients that don’t qualify to be a patient in the program because they don’t suffer from a condition that is on the list of qualifying conditions. Medical marijuana helps them alleviate their suffering, and several other states recognize the condition they suffer from as qualifying to become a medical marijuana patient in those states.

Can Cannabis Help Reverse Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia have become increasingly epidemic among our expanding age 65 and over population. As of 2015, there are 5.3 million Americans diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. At least a third of them don’t know they are afflicted.

Earlier onset Alzheimer’s has also been on the rise. Nearly a quarter million are under 65. More women than men are afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), currently two-thirds of Alzheimer’s sufferers are women.

Their inability to handle normal day to day chores demands caretaker attention, which itself can lead to frustration and worsening mental health among family members or even professional care takers.

Medical marijuana closer to reality in NH with cultivation permit approval

Rochester will be growing site for Plymouth dispensary

ROCHESTER, N.H. —The availability of medical marijuana in New Hampshire is a big step closer to reality after the state gave approval to the first of three locations to cultivate the drug.

The Department of Health and Human Services confirmed Friday that it has started mailing out identification cards to 176 Granite Staters who qualified to purchase medical marijuana. The drug first has to be grown and cultivated, and Rochester is one of three locations where that will happen.

A mill building will be home to Sanctuary ATC's medical cannabis cultivation operation, complete with a lab and commercial kitchen.

Marijuana Use, Dependency can be Treated by This Drug but With Potent Health Risks

In order to supplement the existing psychosocial treatments on substance abuse, the researchers from Brown University conducted a study on the efficacy of the drug topiramate for treating the use of cannabis in adolescents.

The findings of their study showed that by incorporating the use of the drug topiramate in the treatment together with psychological counseling, particularly the motivational enhancement therapy (MET), the use of marijuana among the youth smokers was suppressed in a significant level as compared to a treatment, which only involves counseling alone, says a public release from EurekAlert.
