California: Del Rey Oaks ready to lead the way on medical marijuana again

Del Rey Oaks >> Besides holding the distinction of being the only city in Monterey County to have a medical marijuana dispensary, Del Rey Oaks seems poised to be the only city on the Peninsula to allow the cultivation and delivery of marijuana for medicinal purposes.

“I anticipate that will be the case,” said Del Rey Oaks City Manager Dan Dawson of what will happen Tuesday night as the City Council votes on whether to allow the delivery and personal cultivation of medicinal cannabis within city limits.

Cities throughout California have been in a frenzy to get municipal codes on the books to control marijuana dispensaries, cultivation and delivery.

Prague: Medical cannabis market shows growing pains

The Czech Republic took a bold step back in 2013 when lawmakers agreed to legalise the sale of medicinal cannabis or marihuana. But the development of this market, which can conceivably challenge that of the established pharmaceutical companies across a wide range of pain killers and treatments, is showing some local and global growing pains.

One of those seeking to develop the market for medical cannabis in the Czech Republic and Europe is Prague-based Sean Carney, actually a former business journalist. He is now working as the director of business development and government for Europe for the Canadian cannabis company Tilray. It has a license to produce, process, and manufacture medicinal cannabis products from the Canadian federal government.

Pharmaceutical companies fight marijuana legalization to keep patients addicted to opioid painkillers

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is constantly finding ways to bypass state laws that sanction medical marijuana and harass providers who are operating under those state laws. They are overt and obvious with their application of federal laws.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), which operates under the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), still classifies marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug, a rating that classifies it medicinally useless, dangerous, and addictive. Strangely, the pharmaceutical drugs that are the most dangerous and addictive are Big Pharma's expensive and toxic opiate based pain killers.

Canada: Medicinal marijuana lounge opens in downtown Windsor

Windsor's first medical marijuana vaping lounge barely had time to open its doors and city officials are talking about finding ways to regulate this type of business.

Higher Limits is already buzzing with customers after opening about a week ago, according to co-owner Jon Liedtke, who says he offers a safe place for medicinal marijuana users to hang out while also eliminating some of the stigma attached to marijuana use.

"We want to bring cannabis out of the closet and put it in the forefront," Liedtke told CBC's Afternoon Drive on Monday. "Right in downtown Windsor is as much of the forefront as we think we can get."

Strong Memorial Hospital Participating in Cannabis-Based Drug Trials

Researchers at Strong Memorial Hospital are involved in clinical trials with a drug derived from cannabis.

The Investigational New Drug is called Epidiolex, and it's different from medical marijuana available through the state's dispensaries. It's almost pure Cannabidiol, which is a chemical compound in cannabis thought to help reduce seizures.

Currently, URMC is involved in an FDA-approved double blind study to test the effectiveness of the drug, the results of which should be available in about a year.

Researchers are now planning for another study, called a Compassionate Use Study, to test the side effects of Epidiolex, and how it reacts with other medications. This study will involved children and young adults.

Medical marijuana producer Bedrocan lowers its prices to $5 a gram

TORONTO — Licensed marijuana producer Bedrocan is slashing the price of all six of its medical cannabis strains to $5 a gram, citing a desire to make medicine more affordable for patients.

The company’s products previously cost $7.50 a gram.

Bedrocan Canada Inc. is a subsidiary of Canopy Growth Corp. (TSXV:CGC), a combined company formed when Bedrocan merged with Tweed Marijuana Inc.

Bedrocan president Marc Wayne says the company will still be able to turn a profit, even after price cuts that amount to roughly 33 per cent.

“We’re very good at producing cannabis at a low cost,” said Wayne.
