Consuming Cannabis While Pregnant: The Jury is Still Out

More questions than answers from a new study out of The Netherlands.

Recent studies suggest that there could be differences in brain thickness between children who are exposed to cannabis and those who aren’t — but do these studies tell the whole story?

Across the pond, an hour south from Amsterdam, Dr. Hanan El Marroun, of Erasmus University Medical Center in The Netherlands has dedicated his work to researching one of the most overlooked aspects of cannabis use: consuming while pregnant.

Legalize Marijuana for the Taxes? It's No Pot of Gold

Learn from Colorado's folly. Unless Arizona does something about medical marijuana, legalization won't produce promised revenues.

Forty percent of the taxes on marijuana would be directed to the Department of Education for construction, maintenance and operation costs, including compensation of K-12 teachers. Another 40 percent would be set aside for full-day kindergarten programs. And 20 percent would go to the Department of Health Services for unspecified uses. Revenue from the taxes could not flow into the state's general fund, which would allow it to be spent for other purposes.

Medical Marijuana as a Tool to Reduce Opiate Addiction

Vermont has approved medical cannabis for chronic pain in an effort to reduce opiate abuse. Will other states follow suit?

The country is currently mired in what some are calling an “opioid painkiller crisis,” and Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin took concrete action earlier this month to address the crisis.

The Democratic governor added chronic pain to the state’s list of health conditions that qualify for medical marijuana treatment.

Medical-Marijuana Businesses in Ohio Face Obstacles, Opportunities

After five years of quiet but rapid growth making equipment for the marijuana industry in other states, Apeks Supercritical is ready to ramp up business in Ohio.

With passage of a state medical-marijuana law that takes effect Sept. 8, the company not only expects to see a jump in manufacturing orders, but it also plans to get into the business as a marijuana processor.

“We had to work from the sidelines,” said Andy Joseph, Apeks’ CEO. “Now, I’m very optimistic about doing business in Ohio. I think it’s going to be fantastic.

“This isn’t just a bunch of stoners trying to get high all the time,” he said. “This is real business and real opportunities for the state of Ohio. This is truly an economic-development opportunity for the state.”

P.E.I. Medical Marijuana to Be Ready by Christmas

The first crop from Prince Edward Island's medicinal marijuana factory is on the way.

Edwin Jewell has been planning Canada's Island Garden marijuana for the last few years, submitting the licence application to Health Canada in September 2013. The final step in the licensing process is to submit a test crop for inspection by Health Canada. Jewell expects that process will be completed by Christmas.

The Coexistence of FDA Approved Cannabis-Based Drugs and Medical Marijuana Provided through State-Licensed Businesses

The difference between marijuana and cannabis often leads to confusion. Technically, the correct botanical name for the plant is cannabis. However, it is commonly referred to by a variety of slang or local names,  depending on the country or region.

The word marijuana only entered America’s popular vocabulary in the early 1900s and then began to refer to the cannabis plant that provided psychoactive effects. Today, in North America, France and parts of Latin America, the plant is commonly referred to as marijuana, but in much of the rest of the world, it is known as cannabis.

How Can Cannabis Help People with Sickle Cell Anemia?

Cannabis has been used medicinally for a very long time. People have employed this resinous flower to treat symptoms from minor physical discomfort to epilepsy and arthritis, and now, sickle cell anemia.

What Is Sickle Cell Anemia?

Sickle cell anemia is a blood disease. Healthy blood cells are shaped like donuts without a hole. These disc-shaped organisms are small, but contain our genetic code and, more importantly, our oxygen. Oxygen, as I’m sure you know, is what we breathe, and most times when our oxygen supply is put in jeopardy, so are our lives.

Some Texas legislators ready for more medical marijuana use

Some Texas legislators would like to see more allowable uses for medical marijuana by expanding a law approved in 2015.

The law lets patients with a rare form of epilepsy be legally treated with cannabidiol, or CBD, the Austin American-Statesman reported (http://atxne.ws/1UVXxm7 ).

The Texas Department of Public Safety has not yet completed the process to permit CBD businesses to get up and running. The first permits are scheduled to be granted in June 2017, the newspaper reported.

Sen. José Menéndez, of San Antonio, failed to get a broad medical marijuana bill approved in 2015. He said he’d support any expansion of the current law for therapeutic uses.

Long-term cannabis use NOT associated with health problems, study finds

The debate over whether the benefits of marijuana use are worth the risks continues to rage, as more and more states make moves to legalize it. While much remains unknown about its effects, a group of researchers recently made an important discovery that should lay some doubts to rest: Long-term marijuana use does not lead to any physical health problems. In fact, the only issue the researchers were able to link it to was a higher incidence of gum disease. For many people facing serious issues such as cancer and epilepsy who turn to marijuana, this news will be highly welcomed.
