Science: Regular consumption of marijuana keeps you fit

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Here’s a new health-related adage to consider: Regular consumption of marijuana keeps you thin and active.

According to researchers at Oregon Health and Science University, people who use marijuana more than five times per month have a lower body mass index (BMI) than people who do not marijuana.

The researchers concluded:

“Heavy users of cannabis had a lower mean BMI compared to that of never users, with a mean BMI being 26.7 kg/m in heavy users and 28.4 kg/m in never users.”

It is now illegal to have any type of marijuana, even medical marijuana, at the Orlando International Airport.

The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority Board unanimously approved the medical marijuana ban Wednesday.

A draft policy published this week by the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority puts medical marijuana users at risk of arrest when flying out of Orlando International Airport, despite 71 percent of Florida voters choosing to legalize weed for medical uses last November.

Alberta Sees New Cannabis Producers Enter the Game amid Volatility

Alberta's latest cannabis growers said Tuesday they remain bullish about the nascent industry despite a major sell-off of pot stocks that has sent share prices tumbling for months.

After submitting its application for a production license four years ago, Airdrie's Sundial Growers secured Health Canada's approval last week, becoming the third legal producer of medical marijuana in Alberta.

The facility west of Airdrie is relatively small for the industry, at 30,000 square feet, but the company plans to break ground in the coming weeks on a $120-million grow-op spanning 400,000 square feet in the central Alberta town of Olds.

Canada: With Legalization Coming, Researchers Implore Federal Government to Make It Easier to Study Cannabis

With cannabis legalization on the horizon next year, the federal government must make it easier to study the potential medical benefits of the drug and evaluate how ending prohibition might affect society, according to an open letter to politicians from dozens of the country’s leading academics and public-health researchers who study the drug.

“Under widespread global prohibition, cannabis research has been limited by the criminalization and stigmatization of cannabis use and users, leading to substantial gaps in knowledge around the harms and benefits of both medical and non-medical cannabis,” reads a letter sent Monday to federal lawmakers on the letterhead of the BC Centre on Substance Use, an organization funded by the provincial government to study drugs.

Canadian Company PharmaCielo Ltd Could Be the First to Grow Legal Pot in Colombia

If illicit pot plants flourishing covertly in the Colombian countryside represent the marijuana industry’s past, then Canada’s commercial-scale medical licensing system represents its future.

PharmaCielo Ltd., a privately held medical marijuana producer with global ambitions, is hoping to capitalize on both those traditions.

The company, which has board members from U.S. big tobacco and big pharma, is headquartered in Canada — a decision made due to this country’s sophisticated medical cannabis regulations, friendly financial markets and growing base of accountants, lawyers and bankers with cannabis expertise.

Britain Opens Its First Official Weed Research Facility for Medical Marijuana

This summer, the Uk’s first medical cannabis research facility is going to open – studying the medical uses of weed for the first time in this country.

Do they need any volunteers, we wonder?

The facility will be opened by Medipen – who tested a cannabis vaporiser with the NHS last year.

The Medipen contains ‘cannabidiol’ (CBD), a chemical from cannabis which campaigners claim helps with diseases including cancer and Crohn’s disease.

Crucially, the oil doesn’t contain any THC, the chemical in cannabis which causes the high – and it is legal in the UK.

But in the new facility – at an as-yet-undisclosed location – will explore the use of THC (the chemical in cannabis which gets you stoned) as a treatment for cancer patients.
