New clinic in region touts the benefits of medical marijuana: ON

Waterloo Medical Cannabis Clinic launches to meet the region’s growing demand for the product.

The inspiration for the newest cannabis clinic in the Waterloo Region came from Dave Schenk’s personal experience with the medicinal properties of the drug, slated to be legal for recreational use in July.

“I was relying on ibuprofen to get through the days from arthritis pain,” explained Schenk, a former investment banker who’s now manager of the Waterloo Medical Cannabis Clinic, part of The Clinic Network, which operates 10 medical marijuana centres across the country.

Legal pot isn't a threat to public health or safety, doctors tell Senate

There's little evidence that legalized marijuana poses a threat to public health and safety, and there may be benefits, says a new study from Canadian doctors and researchers.

The report, submitted to the Senate this week, outlines the positive and negative impacts legalization has had in other jurisdictions.

"It hasn't been a public health disaster or crisis yet, but there are some key areas that we need to watch," said Rebecca Haines-Saah, a public health specialist at the University of Calgary and one of the report's authors.

The federal government has promised to legalize recreational marijuana later this year under Bill C-45, which is expected to go to a final vote in the upper house Thursday.

Doctors warn 'quite rare' cannabis allergies likely to rise with legalization

Colorado allergist sees worst symptoms reported by industry workers handling plants.

Soon-to-be-legal cannabis may have some Canadians sniffling and sneezing.

As more people try cannabis for the first time, or the first time in years, a rare but real allergy may appear with symptoms such as sniffles or hives, similar to those that come from a seasonal allergy to pollen.

"Suddenly nose running, eyes itchy, sneezing — that's probably a minor reaction to cannabis and marijuana, and you probably want to avoid that kind of setting in the future," said Dr. Eddy Lang, who oversees emergency rooms in four Calgary-area adult hospitals.
