Markers Insurance has announced it will offer what it claims is the country’s first guaranteed issue insurance product for individuals providing coverage for medical cannabis prescriptions. It expects to initially launch an individual product by August 15, followed by a group product for companies wishing to provide such benefits to their employees.

Markers Insurance is known as the agent of record for The Alternative Health Association of Canada, a national non-profit formed to advocate for improved patient outcomes through health and wellness alternatives. The brokerage is a division of Toronto-based Evergreen Pacific Insurance Corporation (EPIC), which was founded in late 2017.

London's only medical grade cannabis producer, INDIVA has announced plans to expand, adding 30,000 square feet of space and dozens of jobs to its current 10,000 square foot growing and production facility. 

The announcement was made at an open house Wednesday at the company's high security facility in London's south-end. 

"We're in for a lot of growth, no puns intended," INDIVA co-founder, president and CEO Neil Marrotta said Wednesday. "We're up to 25 employees now, I think we'll get close to 50 by the end of the year." 

Marrotta said that INDIVA would also increase its production.

There’s an almost even split among plan sponsors on whether to cover medical marijuana in their health benefits plans, according to the 2018 Sanofi Canada health-care survey.

Those for and against coverage were split evenly, with 34 per cent each, while the remaining 32 per cent said they didn’t know or were unsure. Among plan sponsors that said their health benefits plan should cover medical marijuana, eight per cent said it already does so. That number increases in the public sector (18 per cent) and among employers with more than 500 workers (13 per cent).

The Agrima facility in Pitt Meadows will supply Aurora with dried cannabis flower and trim.

The Agrima Botanicals facility in Pitt Meadows, as part of a new deal, will supply Aurora with up to 20,000 kilograms of dried cannabis flower per year, for the next five years.

In addition to dried cannabis flower, Agrima will also supply up to 6,000 kg of cannabis trim per year.

An Ontario doctor and medical cannabis expert says caution should be taken when prescribing marijuana to cardiovascular patients.

Danial Schecter, co-founder of the Cannabinoid Medical Clinic, said a challenge for physicians is that cannabinoids are not included in the current health-care curriculum.

A consultant for various medical marijuana companies, Schecter was a presenter at the 21st annual Clinical Day in Cardiology, which took place Friday at Cape Breton University.

“It’s important for all health-care professionals to understand what cannabinoids are because we’re going to see them being more and more incorporated into clinical practice guidelines,” said Schecter.

Schecter is the co-founder of the Cannabinoid Medical Clinic, which has 20 Canabo Medical Clinic locations across Canada, including one in Halifax. 

His comments come as doctors see more patients using marijuana, both medically and recreationally. Schecter advocates the use of cannabis to treat a variety of medical conditions.
