Small cannabis growers find roadblocks on path to microcultivation licences

Without warning, his baby had stopped breathing, and he frantically performed CPR while his friend James Gallagher called 911.

Years later, the men still become emotional remembering that day. Boissonneault learned that his daughter had a rare disorder that caused epilepsy, and when pharmaceutical medications failed to cure her seizures, he turned to CBD oil, a non-psychoactive substance in marijuana.

Cannaquestions: Using cannabis to address multiple sclerosis, pain and nausea

Q1: I’ve got MS. What’s cannabis for?

Lawrence is certainly not alone. An estimated one in every 385 Canadians are living with multiple sclerosis (MS), which both Statistics Canada and the MS Society of Canada report is one of the highest incidence in the world. An autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, MS inflames and damages the myelin sheath that protects the nerves, disrupting the signals transmitted along them.

Medical marijuana framework coming for Barbados, but referendum to be held on recreational use of the drug

Before Christmas, Barbados should have a framework for medical cannabis in place. However, freeing up the recreational use of the drug will have to be decided by referendum.

Word of this has come from Prime Minister Mia Mottley, who pointed out that Barbados could no longer afford to miss out on the emerging cannabis industry.

“There is no doubt that we will put a framework in place for medical cannabis within the next week or so. In fact, we have more or less taken a decision, we just need some refining and training with practitioners,” Mottley told the business community gathered at the CIBC FirstCaribbean Barbados Client Economic Forum last Friday.

Shoppers Drug Mart granted licence to sell medical marijuana online

Shoppers Drug Mart has been granted a licence to sell medical marijuana online.

Health Canada's list of authorized cannabis sellers and producers has been updated to reflect that the pharmacy can sell dried and fresh cannabis, as well as plants, seeds and oil.

A website has been set up by the company, which says that patients "with a valid medical document will soon be able to purchase a wide selection of medical cannabis products" from Shoppers.

A spokeswoman for Shoppers' parent company Loblaw Companies Ltd. said it's too soon to say when people will be able to start making orders.

She said the company is still working through a "technical issue" with Health Canada.

Aspiring 'craft' cannabis producers running into unexpected roadblocks

Yan Boissonneault's daughter was turning blue.

"It's been two years now and she hasn't had a seizure," Boissonneault said, standing next to rows of pungent marijuana plants under glowing white lights. "That's what got me involved in this. It's quite personal. ... The only profit it gives me is the joy of seeing my daughter smile."

Veterinarians caution against cannabis for pets

Local veterinarians are hesitant about animals consuming cannabis due to insufficient research.

Under Canada’s legalization framework, cannabis can only be accessed for human use. However, as cannabis legalization has prompted much speculation about how the drug will affect humans, some people are considering if marijuana could be of medical benefit for their pets. Veterinarians and medical experts say owners should hold back, due to little research around the effects of marijuana on animals.

Several local veterinarians in Fredericton, including Dr. Amy Hiebert at the Fredericton Animal Hospital, Dr. Mike Legge at Southpaw Animal Hospital and Dr. Jim Berry at Douglas Animal Hospital, offered their perspectives on the issue.

Could Canada use Nevada’s cannabis shortage protocol?

A majority of Canadian provinces are reporting cannabis supply shortages, as Canada’s licensed cannabis producers and distributors grapple to keep up with the demand for commercial cannabis. Demand for Canada’s recreational cannabis comes from customers that were already acquiring cannabis from the illicit market, and the second source of demand comes from new customers who have never used cannabis but are ready to give it a try. Several warnings about a potential shortage were circulating in the media in the run-up to legalization, but not everyone was sure the problem would manifest.
