Budweiser is testing out another beverage to potentially add to their lineup in Canada, cannabis-infused drinks.

Anheuser-Busch’s subsidiary Labatt Breweries of Canada and the pharmaceutical company Tilray are throwing in $50 million a piece to look into the drinks containing THC and CBD oils.

“Labatt is committed to staying ahead of emerging consumer trends. As consumers in Canada explore THC and CBD-infused products, our innovative drive is matched only by our commitment to the highest standards of product quality and responsible marketing,” Kyle Norrington of Labatt Breweries said.

Canada recently legalized recreational marijuana and the industry has thrived in the country.

One of the world’s largest cannabis companies has inked a deal worth up to $175 million to acquire Whistler Medical Marijuana Corporation (WMMC), the resort’s first, and so far only licensed cannabis producer.

Edmonton-based Aurora Cannabis announced on Monday, Jan. 14 that it had entered into an all-stock deal, including certain milestone payments, to acquire WMMC.

In a release, Aurora CEO Terry Booth said the deal “adds an iconic, organic certified BC-based brand with exceptional traction and a significant price premium in both the medical and retail markets.”

Recruitment for the 48-day trial in 150 patients will begin soon after the expected Health Canada and ethics approval is obtained. Patients in Vancouver, Abbotsford, Prince George, Victoria, Calgary, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Kingston and Toronto will be enrolled in the trial investigating whether cannabis properties reduce cancer-related symptoms including pain, sleep disturbance, anxiety and nausea.

What the increased brain matter volume means is unclear.

"The implication is that this is potentially a outcome of cannabis use", commented senior study author Hugh Garavan, PhD, a University of Vermont (UVM) professor of psychiatry. She is a lecturer at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia.

Dr Orr's research has also shown there is a range of effects within the group of cannabis-using teens, which could be related to cognition and emotion.

"In our sample of cannabis users, the greater volumes in the affected parts of the brain were associated with reductions in psychomotor speed and perceptual reasoning and with increased levels of anxiety two years later", Orr said.

Canadians spent $1.6 billion on legal weed in 2018, more than double the amount that was spent on solely medical cannabis in 2017, according to a new report.

The State of Legal Marijuana Market, released Tuesday by Arcview Market Research and BDS Analytics, found that despite pushing legalization back from the summer until October, Canada still managed to increase its spending on legal weed from $755 million to $1.6 billion, making it the number three legal weed market in the world. A Southwestern Ontario marijuana grower and a fast-food chain have teamed up to open dispensary franchises across Canada, a deal marking the second partnership between a Canadian cannabis company and a restaurant operator.

WeedMD, a licensed pot producer with operations in Strathroy and Aylmer, and Pita Pit Canada, a franchise with more than 600 locations across the globe, have launched Pioneer Cannabis Corp.

“This is a very capital-efficient partnership whereby we leverage our individual expertise into the cannabis space,” WeedMD chief executive Keith Merker said Monday.
