Two marijuana bills heard in final days of Alaska legislative session

Two pieces of marijuana legislation -- one that would create a Marijuana Control Board and a second that would clarify municipal marijuana regulations -- were heard in the Alaska Legislature on Friday afternoon in the final days of the regular session.

The Marijuana Control Board bill, House Bill 123, was moved out of the Senate Finance Committee on Friday afternoon after public testimony.

The bill includes a fiscal note for $1.57 million that would allow for expansion of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board’s staff and resources. The Marijuana Control Board would share the ABC Board’s staff and director.

Alaska needs an able marijuana regulatory board; lawmakers must act

Last November, voters decided it was time for Alaska to take a more sensible, reality-based approach to marijuana. They replaced the failed policy of prohibition with a mandate that the state regulate and tax marijuana similarly to how we treat alcohol. Yet, with only days left in the legislative session, the Legislature has yet to provide the resources needed to establish a regulatory framework.

Indio considers regulating medical marijuana

Indio leaders are looking into whether to allow medical marijuana dispensaries to open in the city.

Officials have created an ad hoc committee to research what role the city could play when it comes to permitting dispensaries and regulating sales.

The decision came after City Attorney Roxanne Diaz gave a presentation updating council members on other cities’ legal battles and pending state legislation.

“We need to fully understand all the issues related to medical marijuana facilities before the state passes any legislation, so that we may consider any city ordinance that might also address these facilities,” Mayor Lupe Ramos Watson said.

Federal Judge Upholds Marijuana's Status As Schedule I; Still As Deadly As Heroin

Hopes were raised and dashed for supporters of marijuana legalization this Wednesday as U.S. District Judge Kimberly J. Mueller upheld marijuana’s status as a Schedule 1 drug fully constitutional. Being the first judge in decades to reexamine marijuana’s classification under the Controlled Substances Act, Mueller offered a potential step forward in examining marijuana from the federal standpoint, but she did not feel it was in her power to make that change.

Dead MMJ Bill in Nevada Holds Lesson for Industry

A bill in Nevada aimed at adjusting the state’s medical marijuana program has died a quite death in the legislature. The bill had been held up in committee and the time limit expired before the Committee on Health and Human Services could give it a hearing.

If passed, the bill would have made it possible to transfer marijuana business licenses, make the licensing process more transparent, and make it easier for marijuana businesses to change locations. Although reasonable in scope, the bill never gained traction in the legislature, leaving outside observers to ask why.
