Drug interdictions result in a loss of about $8 billion in revenue for drug traffickers

On June 12, crew members of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Vigilant offloaded 3,100 pounds of marijuana seized from a go-fast boat intercepted in the Caribbean Sea.

The story on how Coast Guard personnel seized the marijuana in late May in waters between Panama and the Colombian island of San Andrés emerged last week in Miami federal court records.

According to a criminal complaint filed by a special agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the action unfolded May 27 when a go-fast vessel was spotted traveling in international waters about 100 miles south of San Andrés Island, a Colombian possession east of Nicaragua and north of Panama.

Mr Saviano, author of the international bestseller Gomorrah, which exposed the workings of the Neapolitan crime organisation Camorra, said: “The British treat it as not their problem because there aren’t corpses on the street.”

HEALTH: ‘Legalise cannabis,’ says Labour peer GP

Lord Rea: 'There are real reasons why it [cannabis] should be made legal for researchers to concentrate on doing proper, controlled clinical trials to work out what cannabis can do'

CANNABIS should be legalised to improve research into its medicinal qualities, a prominent Camden doctor has told the House of Lords.

Lord Nicolas Rea of Eskdale, who worked as a GP at the Kentish Town Health Centre for 25 years, said the country was “crying out” for a change in the law.

The hereditary peer, from Tufnell Park, is an expert in the drug and served on a select committee in the 1990s that looked into its potential to ease muscle spasms and pain.

Police issue marijuana alert

Police are seeking the public's help in controlling the production of illegal marijuana in Norfolk County.

The 2015 growing season is underway and it promises to be a good one for illegal producers of marijuana. Norfolk OPP advise the public to be cautious and to report suspicious activity associated with marijuana production to the authorities.

“Typically, these illicit crops are located in swamps, cornfields, wooded areas, along rivers and on rural rental properties obscured from view,” Const. Ed Sanchuk of the Norfolk OPP said in a news release. “Marijuana plants are bright green in colour and can grow between three and five feet tall and give off a distinctive strong, pungent musty odour.”

PINON HILLS: Outdoor marijuana grow uprooted, plants seized

San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies on Wednesday uprooted an outdoor marijuana growing operation in Piñon Hills, a rural area of the county near Phelan.

Around 300 plants, some as tall as four feet, were seized and one person was arrested.

The suspect, 33-year-old Mexican national Bulmaro Arreola, was identified by police as a caretaker who was hired to watch over and tend to the plants. He was booked on suspicion of cultivating marijuana.

Police said the grow was not in compliance with the state's medical marijuana laws and it violated the county's prohibition on outdoor cultivation operations.
