Maryland: State Making Progress On Medical Marijuana Program

The law has been on the books now for about a year, but still patients can’t get medical marijuana.

That’s because the state’s Medical Cannabis Commission is setting up the program.

They are making progress.

There are proposed regulations for the growers of medical marijuana and the 94 dispensaries across the state that will get the drug to patients.

Public comment on those regulations is taking place this month.

Baltimore County Delegate Dan Morhaim, of Baltimore County’s 11th District co-sponsored the law.

He’s an emergency room physician and we talked to him this week about the regulations.

Morhaim told Maryland's News This Week that the regulations are a positive step.

Fewer crimes, more revenue as medical marijuana industry stabilizes in Colorado Springs

As the number of medical marijuana shops and dispensary-related crimes in Colorado Springs has fallen over the past five years, medical pot tax revenue in El Paso County has soared.

Data from the city of Colorado Springs, its police department and the Colorado Department of Revenue show interesting trends as the marijuana industry matures amid growing pains that have attracted national attention, including the cash-only nature of the business.

In June 2010, Colorado Springs had 303 unique addresses or locations associated with medical marijuana licenses. Medical marijuana stores and growers were the targets of burglaries or attempted burglaries 42 times that year.

Now, the city has roughly half as many unique licensed locations and almost nonexistent burglaries.

This Is a Big Win for Marijuana and Researchers

Over the past decade, the legal wins enjoyed by marijuana and its supporters have far outnumbered the losses.

Despite Florida failing to become the 24th state to legalize medical marijuana in last year's election (by a mere two percentage points), we've still seen a rapid rise in the number of new states willing to give medical marijuana a try in recent years, and four states (plus Washington D.C.) experimenting with the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes.

Synthetic marijuana hard to legislate

A Des Moines lawmaker is working with civil rights groups to draft legislation that would prohibit racial profiling by Iowa law enforcement officers and require agencies to create citizen boards to review profiling complaints.

In Iowa and across the United States, lawmakers and law enforcement have struggled to pass bills that keep up with the constantly changing chemicals used in synthetic marijuana.

The state Legislature failed to pass a bill this session that would have increased penalties for people convicted of selling synthetic drugs and making illegal chemicals used to manufacture the drugs.

It initially passed the Republican-controlled House, but the Democrat-controlled Senate added amendments the House ultimately rejected.

Cannabis Day Organizers Respond To Aggressive Police Crackdown at Vancouver Art Gallery

Cannabis Day at the Vancouver Art Gallery – for the past 19 years – has been a peaceful protest against marijuana prohibition and a real-life demonstration of a positive alternative to our destructive pot laws.

That peace was fractured yesterday when Vancouver police and city officials arrived in large numbers, acted aggressively to the small crowd and eventually waged a brutal takedown and arrest of several non-violent marijuana activists.

In the past, pot activists, police, and City of Vancouver officials worked together, meeting several times a year to discuss strategy and make the popular rally and cannabis farmers market a safe and enjoyable environment for all.

How America's War On Drugs Unintentionally Aids Mexican Drug Cartels

As the United States government and vigilante groups continue to fight Mexican drug cartels with little direction, experts say there are unintentional consequences from the current war on drugs.

Sanho Tree, the director of the Drug Policy Project at the Institute for Policy Studies, explained to HuffPost Live's Marc Lamont Hill on Tuesday that the U.S. government's drug war has been "an exercise in futility." The prohibition of these drugs, Tree said, has only increased their value.

Kenya: Shock As MP Seeks To Have Marijuana Legalized

A member of parliament has stunned Kenyans after he proposed that Marijuana, famously known among many Kenyans as bhang or weed, be legalized in the country.

Kibra MP Ken Okoth says that it is time Kenyans were allowed to abandon the growth of sugarcane and start growing Marijuana.

He added that Marijuana is a very valuable commodity and has a ready market in the USA and believes it will give Kenyans a lot of money than what they grow today do.

“Let us emancipate ourselves from mental slavery & start planting marijuana, legalize it, & tax it. We should replace sugarcane with medical marijuana which has a ready market in the USA”, Okoth said.
