Marijuana growing spikes Denver energy demand

GOLDEN — Surging electricity consumption by Colorado’s booming marijuana industry is sabotaging Denver’s push to use less energy — just as the White House perfects a Clean Power Plan to cut carbon pollution.

Citywide electricity use has been rising at the rate of 1.2 percent a year, and 45 percent of that increase comes from marijuana-growing facilities, Denver officials said Wednesday.

Denver has a goal of capping energy use at 2012 levels. Electricity is a big part of that.

Cannabis group seeks public input on large scale cultivation ordinance

The nonprofit organization California Cannabis Voice Humboldt unveiled a draft ordinance nearly a year in the making on Tuesday that would regulate medical cannabis cultivation in Humboldt County on parcels larger than five acres.

Standing on the Humboldt County Superior Courthouse steps before a host of supporters, community officials and passersby, CCVH Executive Director Richard Marks called upon growers and non-growers alike to help “create a new future” for the county.

“This community has come to the table, has come out of the shadows, has come into the light and said it’s time to move forward,” Marks said. “And to be honest, it hasn’t been easy and it hasn’t been without tremendous risk. But it hasn’t been in vain. People have listened.”

Lots of interest shown for new batch of marijuana licenses

Massachusetts’s first medical marijuana dispensary opened last week in Salem.

More than 50 applications from companies eager to open medical marijuana dispensaries flooded the offices of state regulators this week, two years after Massachusetts launched its ill-fated licensing process.

The submission of so many applications indicated robust interest in the state’s emerging medical marijuana industry. The state had previously licensed 15 dispensaries, with the first opening last week in Salem.

For marijuana executives who lost hundreds of thousands of dollars vying for licenses during former governor Deval Patrick’s administration, the opportunity to apply again couldn’t come soon enough.

Oregon medical marijuana growers prepare to expand into new retail recreational markets

WILLIAMS, Ore. –  On the third Thursday of each month, veteran medical marijuana growers and hopeful newbies gather in the old Williams Grange hall in a small rural Oregon valley long known for growing some of the best cannabis on the planet.

Since voters last fall made the state the fourth to legalize recreational marijuana, people have been flocking to the hall to get the latest update on lawmakers' progress on crafting rules for the new industry.

The entrepreneurs also share tips on how to produce happy and healthy marijuana plants.

"Why not come to the source to learn about growing?" says Gina Erdmann, director of the Oregon SunGrown Growers' Guild, as she lays out materials on the sign-in table outside the hall, now a community center.

Pharmaceutical Trade Association: Greek Medicine Supply May Be At Risk

Life-saving medications could be an import at risk if Greece defaults on its debt and exits the European Union.

Richard Bergstrom, the director general of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA), sent a note to the European Union Health Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis on Monday notifying him that pharmaceutical companies would continue to send drugs to Greece but felt the supply could be in peril if Europe doesn’t take action soon.

The EFPIA believes the “integrity of the medicines supply chain may be in jeopardy” if Greece reintroduces the drachma, a form of currency whose value will swiftly depreciate, according to Hirschler.
