Kiwibank returning money to medicinal cannabis charity

Thousands of dollars belonging to a charity advocating for medicinal cannabis has been returned after a bank stonewalled its moves to open an account.

United In Compassion (UIC) is a non-profit group advocating for New Zealand-based research into the therapeutic effects of cannabis-based medicines.

Kiwibank was the third bank that UIC, which has been trying to set up an account in the lead-up to a national symposium in April, has hit hurdles with.

On Wednesday afternoon Kiwibank agreed to release the money immediately but won't open an account for the group until compliance issues are sorted.

UIC co-founder Toni-Marie Matich approached Kiwibank for help in June and close to $5000 has been sitting in the account for the last month.

Time to Overhaul the MMPR

Turn the MMPR into a cost recovery program, take a good hard look at the security requirements, permit storefronts, more transparency in licensing process.

Since last week’s election, I have been inundated with phone calls, emails and social media posts asking for my opinion on cannabis legalization. What will it look like (Will home grows be permitted? Will dispensaries be permitted? Will edibles be permitted? etc. etc.) When will it happen?

Well…I have absolutely no idea. There are many different scenarios that can be envisioned for legalization or decriminalization and the path to be taken by our new Liberal government remains to be seen. How quickly anything happens will be driven more by politics than anything else, I believe.

How the marijuana legalization movement went corporate

xt week, Ohio voters will cast ballots on the Responsible Ohio marijuana legalization initiative. If it passes, the initiative will be historic not only for removing the prohibition against recreational marijuana use in the Buckeye State, but also for advancing the control of corporate interests over what was once an entirely grassroots movement to legalize pot.

Liberal CFO/Tweed co-founder could rake in marijuana money with legalization

He may volunteer in his role as chief financial officer with the Liberal Party of Canada, but Chuck Rifici is in line for a big pay day, thanks to one of the party's key platforms.

Rifici, who has been a member of the Liberal national board of directors since 2011, is also the co-founder of Tweed Marijuana Inc., Canada's biggest full-scale producer of government-sanctioned pot producer, which is based in Smiths Falls, Ont.

"I'm simply a shareholder," said Rifici in an e-mail to the Sun on Wednesday.

In the midst of the recent election campaign, Rifici branched out with two new ventures.

Planning Ahead for the Changing Times in Cannabis Public Markets

At the risk of dating myself, one of my preferred Broadway plays is “South Pacific” and “Bali Hai” is a song in the show. Bali Hai is an island out in the range upon which many fantastic things can and actually do happen in the show. However naturally it is found to be a fantasy and the truth of World War II eventually intrudes upon the story.

Investing in marijuana public companies is like traveling to Bali Hai. We can all see it in the distance and no doubt there are potentially some wonderful things there, however with the exception of the late-2013 to early-2014 bubble, from which fortunes were made, there has actually been little continual progress in producing a genuinely public business sector Version 2.0.

Two marijuana dispensaries named as first City of Vancouver officially moves to close

The city has officially sent out its first round of letters ordering the closure of specific marijuana dispensaries.

But even though there are more than 90 storefronts illegally selling cannabis in Vancouver, only two were mailed letters stating they must shut their doors “immediately” or “be subject to enforcement action”.

Those locations are Quick Stop Dispensary at 2893 East Broadway and Health Lifestyle Marijuana Supply Centre at 201–1011 Commercial Drive, according to Vancouver’s chief licensing inspector, Andreea Toma.

Niagara Falls opens door for medical marijuana facilities

NIAGARA FALLS — With the production of medical marijuana expected to become a $2-billion industry that could provide much needed jobs, city politicians have decided Niagara Falls wants in.

The question is, just how will the city go about creating the climate for the establishment of a medical marijuana facility in the city?

As it turns out, councillors were split on how to integrate such a facility in the city.

It was decided that the city would tackle applications on a site-by-site basis rather than apply a single set of standards. Council voted 5-4 in favour of that approach, with Mayor Jim Diodati breaking the deadlock after council split down the middle, with some preferring that a standard setback be included.
