Hillary Clinton’s marijuana policy could lead to regulation of the industry

Former secretary of state wants Schedule II classification for marijuana

Hillary Clinton’s stance on marijuana legalization could cost the budding industry.

The former secretary of state and the front-runner in the Democratic presidential race told a town hall in South Carolina on Saturday that she supports reclassifying cannabis from a Schedule I to a Schedule II substance. Schedule I drugs have high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use, while a Schedule II classification means a drug has a high potential for abuse, but also an accepted medical use, like morphine and cocaine.

Marijuana society may close Port Alberni storefront weeks after opening

Port Alberni’s first and only medical marijuana dispensary may be shutting its doors for good today after a short stint in the city.

WeeMedical Dispensary Society opened its Port Alberni location two weeks ago but it has quickly learned its not welcome.

The city’s mayor says such dispensaries are illegal and should not operate in the city until they are.

“We don’t want to be in the position as a city where we’re seeming to endorse something that currently isn’t legal,” says Port Alberni mayor Mike Ruttan. “Frankly, for a business to open up without even discussing it with the city beforehand is disrespectful.”

The future of marijuana legalization

“Issue 3 was nothing more and nothing less than a business plan to seize control of the recreational marijuana market in Ohio”, Curt Steiner, director of Ohioans Against Marijuana Monopolies, said in election night remarks.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio called on the county to immediately address any issues that could disenfranchise voters.

“This Ohio vote has been sort of a side-show that no one else was either anxious about or excited about elsewhere in the country”, he said.

Flandreau area residents against marijuana plan relieved

FLANDREAU, S.D. - After growing a marijuana crop worth millions, the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe has decided to suspend its marijuana program.
Tribal attorney Seth Pearman says tribal leaders decided to destroy their current crop and pause production until the tribe can get in contact with the u.s. department of justice.

Since the tribe announce in June that it wanted to legalize marijuana and sell it on the reservation, people have been coming forward, questioning whether or not that's a good idea. And now after Saturday's announcement, many people say they are celebrating the decision.

“Thank God there's an answer to prayer", Flandreau resident, Bart Sample sighed.

Legalized marijuana won't save Indian reservations

You know what our most impoverished, crime-ridden, ill-educated communities in the country need? More drugs.

On Tuesday, the Seneca Nation in Western New York voted to consider growing and selling medical marijuana on its territory. Other Indians tribes are going to follow suit. Thanks to a new ruling by the Justice Department, tribes can now distribute marijuana, irrespective of the policy of the state in which they’re located.

Perhaps this sounds familiar. It’s how we got Indian casinos. The 1998 Indian Gaming Regulation Act (IGRA) cemented the notion that Indian lands were sovereign and answerable only to the federal government, not the state governments, with regard to gambling.

Oregon marijuana grows are causing problems for the state’s electrical grid

SALEM, Ore. — Indoor growing operations for legal marijuana businesses are causing problems for Oregon’s electrical grid, according to officials from electrical utility company.

Pacific Power said Wednesday that Oregon marijuana grow operations have taken grids above capacity, blowing out seven transformers since July and causing outages and equipment damage, reported The Statesman Journal.

The problems are a remnant of marijuana’s black market past, when substandard electrical work powered the lights at growing sites.
