Australia: Cannabis farming future

QUEENSLAND could become a major producer of cultivated cannabis for medicinal treatment.

On October 17, the Australian Government announced that "the Commonwealth intends to develop amendments to the Narcotic Drugs Act 1967 that will establish the authority, within the Department of Health, to regulate the cultivation of cannabis for medical and scientific use required under the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs 1961 ... cannabis material cultivated in Australia may then be used to conduct clinical trials and develop therapeutic products to be used in accordance with the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989".

Minister for Health Cameron Dick welcomed the Federal Government's move.

Australia: Proposal to grow medicinal cannabis in Glen Innes

Northern Tablelands MP, Adam Marshall, has put forward a proposal to grow medicinal cannabis at a site near Glen Innes.

Mr Marshall said the Department of Primary Industries Glen Innes Research Station is the perfect site for planned trials of the controlled cultivation of medicinal cannabis.

He's raised the idea with the State Government and Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair, and said Glen Innes Shire Council Mayor Col Price is supportive.

The Federal Government last month made a decision to permit the controlled cultivation of cannabis for medicinal or scientific purposes in New South Wales.

The State Government is now searching for potential trial sites.

Boulder tweaks marijuana regulations, but doesn't address sponsorship issue

The Boulder City Council adopted a set of changes to the city's marijuana regulations Tuesday night without addressing an outstanding question about advertising related to sponsorships.

Councilwomen Mary Young, Lisa Morzel and Suzanne Jones questioned why pot businesses would be treated so differently from alcohol businesses, which can have banners and booths at festivals.

In fact, a presentation after the marijuana vote on plans for the downtown Civic Area included a craft beer festival as an example of the type of event that could be held at gathering spaces, sparking an outburst from Morzel: "How is that not advertising?"

High-awatha tribe torch cannabis crop to thwart raid

A South Dakota American Indian tribe that sought to open the nation’s first marijuana resort burned its crop after federal officials signalled a potential raid, the tribal president said yesterday.

Flandreau Santee Sioux President Anthony Reider said the tribe had three weeks of discussions with authorities that culminated with a meeting in Washington that included a Justice Department official and US Attorney for South Dakota Randolph Seiler.

Mr Reider said the tribe wasn’t told a raid was imminent - only that one was possible if the government’s concerns weren’t addressed. He said the main holdup is whether the tribe can sell marijuana to non-Indians, along with the origin of the seeds used for its crop.

Mile High Comics plans HQ sale, thanks legal pot for real estate value

One of the largest comic book retailers in the world is putting its north Denver headquarters on the market — and the owner of Mile High Comics credits the state’s legal marijuana economy for boosting his potential profit.

But the decision to sell the 22,000 square foot warehouse at 2151 W. 56th Ave. in Denver didn’t come easy to Chuck Rozanski, who started the legendary business in his parents’ basement in 1969, when he was 13.

“I wish I could say that I was was prescient about the Denver real estate market,” said Rozanski, “but this is truly a case of luck shining on me and my being extremely fortunate.”
