Massachusetts: Taking a closer look at proposed Freetown marijuana center

FREETOWN — The Annual Town Meeting rolled out the red carpet for marijuana growing operations in 2013 when it rezoned a section of the business park off of South Main Street.

The Freetown action also included adult entertainment venues.

As town Planning Technician Lauren Moreau told The Standard-Times, the action lets the town satisfy the law while keeping these activities in an acceptable area.

Now the Colorado company AmeriCann's formal proposal with the Planning Board would build what will eventually be a huge — almost a million square feet huge — marijuana growing operation called the "Massachusetts Medical Cannabis Center.”

Columbia to legalise marijuana in order to increase exports of legal weed

One of the world's top drug producing countries, Columbia, is planning to legalise medical marijuana. The country's president Juan Manuel Santos said recently that he would sign a decree sometime this week, which would control the use, production, and export of medicinal marijuana.

Colombian officials are betting that this move could become big business as it would increase the exports of legal marijuana. Santos, who opined that there was a big demand, told the BBC, "There are already firms in Canada and the US that are using marijuana for a variety of therapeutic, medicinal treatments."

Jamaica is importing ganja seeds?

Some time ago there were news reports that, as part of the process of developing a regulatory framework for the Jamaican medical marijuana industry, the Government was planning to import 100 ganja seeds. As was expected, the usual responses to this announcement were observed. Namely shock, horror and outrage that the reputed "sensimilla capital" of the Caribbean is to import Cannabis sativa seeds.

For example one online response read: "This is total disrespect! We will have to import ganja seeds when we are said to have the best quality stuff!" These are typical knee-jerk reactions to headlines without considering the rationale behind the decision to import seeds. That assertion that Jamaica has the best quality "stuff" may be based more on feelings than on facts.

The US university making students the masters of marijuana

Jean Kennedy has degrees in biology and a Master’s in special education. Now, she’s trying to decide what to do with her third degree: a  certificate of achievement from Oaksterdam University, the Harvard Business School of marijuana.

“I’m Italian,” said Ms Kennedy, 56, a retired high school biology teacher with graying hair and a heavy New York accent. “You know Italians, we grow tomatoes. Maybe I’ll grow some plants.”

Horticulture 102 is one of the many subjects she studies at Oaksterdam, whose campus is set amid the hip cafés, restaurants and cannabis dispensaries of downtown Oakland. Founded in 2007, the school sees itself as a training ground for citizen advocates in the fight to legalise marijuana.
