California: State prioritizes ‘good standing’ cannabis

When California begins issuing licenses to medical marijuana businesses, the first on the list will be those that had played by the rules of their local governments.

To get this priority status, the operators must show they were in “good standing” with their local jurisdiction, according to the state’s new marijuana laws. But “good standing” is currently undefined in Humboldt County, and operators only have until Jan. 1, 2016 to prove they fall under it.

Faced with this fast-approaching deadline, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors called on staff to create a new Commercial Cannabis Activity Registry that will allow operators seeking county compliance to register.

Fountain Valley bans medical marijuana cultivation, delivery

FOUNTAIN VALLEY – The medical marijuana business is still unwelcome in Fountain Valley.

Recently enacted state laws require cities to spell out restrictions regarding marijuana, and over the past two weeks, Fountain Valley officials have done just that.

On Nov. 12, the city’s planning commissioners unanimously recommended an ordinance banning all cannabis activity and cultivation. The City Council agreed with that recommendation Tuesday night, voting 4-1 to expressly prohibit marijuana enterprises. Councilman Mark McCurdy voted against the ordinance.

“A lot of cities are having to do this right now,” said Matt Mogensen, Fountain Valley planning and building director. “It’s just a housekeeping measure.”

There is still a lot of gray area and employers actually have a lot of flexibility in how they handle the law. A conference at Danville Area Community College was aimed at helping bosses figure out what's okay and what's not okay with marijuana use.

Medical marijuana use is not protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act, even by card-carrying patients since it's federally banned.

Why Colorado Is Warning People Against Investing in Marijuana

The marijuana business is booming in Colorado, with pot sales topping $100 million for the first time in August.

But should investors put their money into the cannabis industry?

The State of Colorado doesn't quite say "no," but it comes close.

Colorado's Division of Securities has issued an "investor alert" that warns folks against pouring their cash into the "next big thing." And the document includes marijuana alongside binary options and digital currency such as bitcoin as business opportunities that may turn into money losers, not big winners.
