OLCC talks licensing, temporary regulations for marijuana bussinesses

OLCC visits Bend for the first of seven workshops

Raised hands quickly shot up from potential recreational marijuana business owners who had plenty of questions for the Oregon Liquor Control Commission at a meeting Thursday.

The state agency’s first of seven workshops about licensing and temporary rules was at the Riverhouse Convention Center in Bend. The other workshops will take place in Medford, Eugene, Salem and Portland. About 250 people filed into the downstairs Exhibit Hall at the convention center to hear from OLCC officials and ask about the licensing process moving forward.

The OLCC will begin accepting license applications Jan. 4. The state agency will regulate growers, retailers and laboratories, wholesalers and processors.

New medical marijuana business holds open house

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) - A new medical marijuana business held an open house Friday evening.

Oasis Medical Cannabis is located on Industrial Road, just south of Wyoming Avenue. The open house also included a fundraiser for the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada.

The open house allowed members of the public to tour the facilities. Medical marijuana patients with valid cards will be only let in after the dispensary opens.

Oasis has a few more hoops to jump through before they can open next week. They have inspections from the state and the city. Once they get the green light, they can get the product and start selling to patients.

Decide on a marijuana tax: Rolling back on residency requirements for local pot businesses

News-Miner opinion: Other Alaska communities have either approved or are making good headway on taxing marijuana products in preparation for the anticipated legal sales of pot next year.

It’s time for the Fairbanks North Star Borough to get on with it now, also.

The Borough Assembly last took up the issue in August, with its members split over whether to ask voters to authorize a 5 percent tax or an 8 percent tax. The idea was to get something on the October ballot so that Fairbanks could be ready when pot businesses start opening in the borough.

Two assembly members were absent from that August meeting, and it also was suggested that maybe it would be better to wait until a new assembly was seated after the October election.

Drakelow Tunnels cannabis factory: Father jailed for drug production

A father of four found guilty of being involved in a major cannabis factory discovered in a historic network of tunnels has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.

Jason Whiley had denied growing more than 800 cannabis plants in a section of the sprawling Drakelow Tunnels between Kinver and Kidderminster.

But a jury found him guilty of being concerned in the production of cannabis with a street value of about £650,000 in October.

Yesterday, Whiley was given a jail sentence of two-and-a-half years at Hereford Crown Court.

Alaska Marijuana committee iffy about excise taxes

Sitka’s marijuana advisory committee doesn’t want to impose excise taxes on the now-legal drug – at least, not right now. While no firm recommendations were made at a meeting earlier this week, several members spoke in support of leaving taxes off the table.

The Committee is mulling over an excise tax on marijuana and related-products, like edibles. Excise taxes are fees levied on the process of getting the product to the store counter, generally paid to a city or municipality by a wholesaler.
