Saskatoon councillors vote against business licences for marijuana dispensaries

Saskatchewan Compassion Club owner Mark Hauk outside of the Saskatoon Police Station.

A City of Saskatoon committee has made it much more difficult for marijuana dispensaries to open in the city.

Today, the Standing Policy Committee on Planning, Development and Community Services voted against issuing business licences to marijuana dispensaries.

Administration argued that medical marijuana falls under federal jurisdiction, and anyone involved with it must get a federal licence.

It also said that the City of Saskatoon should only issue a business licence to the dispensary if it receives federal approval.

Marijuana in the US: business booming, attitudes changing

The marijuana business is booming in the US, with projected legal sales expected to be up more than a billion dollars in 2016 compared to 2015, when the legal market was worth $6.7 billion in sales.

What’s more, over half of Americans now say they support the legalisation of cannabis, according to a Pew Research Center study.

Marijuana is authorised, in one form or another, across 38 states and the District of Columbia. That means 86 percent of Americans now live in a state where the use of legal marijuana is permitted to some degree.

Why Public Marijuana Pages are Being Deleted by Facebook

Only 23 states and Washington, D.C. have legalized marijuana in the United States, as per Mic. While some have legalized cannabis for medical purposes, some have embraced marijuana for recreational use, specifically in Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and the District of Columbia.

With this legalization comes the proliferation of marijuana cafes across the country. With social media being a useful marketing tool for business, it wasn't unlikely that these business and groups would take to social media to promote their products and lifestyle.

Facebook restores page for medical marijuana dispensary in New Jersey

TRENTON, New Jersey -- Facebook has restored the business page of one of three New Jersey medical marijuana dispensaries it shut down last week for violating the social media company's policy against promoting the sale of drugs.

An official with Compassionate Sciences in Bellmawr said Monday that it got its Facebook page back over the weekend after removing photos of marijuana and prices.

Another dispensary, Breakwater Treatment and Wellness in Cranbury, created a new Facebook page.

A Facebook page was up for the third dispensary, Garden State in Woodbury, although it was unclear if it was a new page or the original that had been shut down. A spokesman for the business did not return a call seeking comment on Monday night.

Pot and work: 5 small firms pledge not to fire workers for using medical marijuana

With all the concerns confronting Illinois' medical cannabis pilot program — not enough patients, not enough qualifying conditions, not enough time — a handful of Chicago-area employers want their workers to know that they don't have to worry about job security.

Five small companies — a law firm, a real estate services firm, two health care organizations and a nightclub — have announced their intentions to support employees who use medical marijuana. It's a tangled topic across the country, with state laws permitting pot use clashing with federal laws that don't, and employers seeking to balance employee needs and rights against workplace safety.
