Here's How Legalization Affects The Job Market

Cannabis legalization is coming in Canada and with it is coming a new business sector. Economic growth, tax revenue and job creation are the exciting upside of this emerging industry. What does this mean for jobs?

Let's look at a U.S. example. Colorado is one of four states with recreational cannabis sales and made $996-million dollars in tax revenue in 2015. That's almost a billion dollars, people! Along with that came a budding job market and a decreased unemployment rate.

Types of Jobs

Like other businesses, the cannabis industry will have a need for traditional roles in areas like finance, marketing, human resources, operations and IT.

Inside Pesticide-Free Certification Program for Pot Grows

As commercial marijuana grows in Colorado continue to receive plant quarantines and product recalls over the use of potentially harmful pesticides, herbicides and fungicides, one industry group is trying to set up a way to ensure safe growing practices. The Organic Cannabis Association's pesticide-free certification program will test participating grows for residuals of harmful pesticides and award scores based on the products used at the grow.

"We view cannabis producers as just another set of farmers," says John-Paul Maxfield, chairman of the OCA. "This is our first step toward building a larger organic certification."

Colorado Just Recalled More Marijuana Because of Illegally Used Pesticides

Colorado cannabis regulators on Monday recalled medical and recreational marijuana grown by two cannabis businesses — RR Services and Advanced Medical Alternatives — over concerns the plants were grown with unapproved pesticides.

The recalls, called health advisories by the state, are the tenth and eleventh holds announced by the Colorado Marijuana Enforcement Division in less than one month.

The advisories note that 42 batches of RR Services’ marijuana and 10 batches of Advanced Medical Alternatives’ cannabis each tested positive for myclobutanil, a fungicide considered “slightly hazardous” by the World Health Organization and a “Bad Actor” by the Pesticide Action Network.

Marijuana Economy May Hit $44 Billion by 2020

The weed business is booming.

In its annual report on the U.S. cannabis industry, Marijuana Business Daily predicts up to $44 billion in economic impact by 2020. Last year's report predicted $14 billion to $17 billion in impact for 2016. The publication has been producing the report since 2012.

Marijuana industry busily working to shed illicit past and go legal

You won't find brightly coloured bongs or bubble gum-flavoured rolling papers displayed against the backdrop of exposed brick and modern, industrial-style furnishings at Tokyo Smoke.

Instead, the shop — located in a former shipping dock nestled between two warehouses in Toronto's west end — carries high-end pot paraphernalia befitting the pages of a design magazine while also serving up cups of artisanal coffee.

Pipes handcrafted by California-based ceramicist Ben Medansky sit alongside a pricey portable vaporizer, a reimagined version of the French press coffeemaker launched via a Kickstarter campaign and a selection of what shop owner Alan Gertner calls "museum quality collectibles" — items such as vintage Barbies and a vintage Hermes bag.

Jamaica Can Earn US$300m From Nutraceuticals, Medical Cannabis

Renowned scientist Dr Henry Lowe has pointed to the huge foreign exchange potential of nutraceuticals and medical cannabis and says that Jamaica needs to move quickly to capture its share of what is a rapidly growing global market.

“With limited effort, there is an estimated potential earning of over US$300 million from these two products in the next three years if the products are properly marketed,” Lowe, who has developed a number of nutraceutical products using Jamaican plants, told the 50th anniversary annual general meeting of the Jamaica Exporters’ Association last week
