In West Virginia, residents will soon be seeing a lot more green than they’re used to. And it may come in the form of dollar bills, too.

Researchers from West Virginia University are teaming up with a new startup called Agri Carb Electric Corporation to investigate the farming infrastructure benefits of hemp. This will mark the first time West Virginia has allowed hemp cultivation in 70 years. 

Amendment 139, a proposal that's seeking a spot on the November ballot, is getting attention primarily for a section that would limit the potency of marijuana products to 16 percent THC — a reduction for a huge number of currently available items.

But that's not all the measure would do. A139, which is on view below, would also put childproof-packaging regulations into the Colorado Constitution along with labeling rules that could require warnings about mood swings, impaired thinking, possible addiction and even temporary paranoia.

Strapped into the pilot’s seat of his private jet, Scotts Miracle-Gro CEO Jim Hagedorn thrusts the throttle forward and hurtles down the runway, a typical start to the day for the former F-16 fighter pilot, who commutes 500 miles from his home on Long Island, N.Y. to his office outside Columbus, Ohio. Hawaii’s medical marijuana dispensaries could generate between $12 million and $38 million in revenue in their first year of operations, according to the Hawaii Dispensary Alliance.

A report from the trade groups predicts those figures could grow to as much as $80.5 million by 2018. The forecast is based upon the state’s more than 14,000 registered medical marijuana patients growing to between 30,000 and 40,000 in the next two years, The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.

Christopher Garth, the alliance’s executive director, said the state’s economic gain from the opening of the medical pot dispensaries depends largely upon the growth of registered medical marijuana patients.

Rossana Rilla could sell marijuana under Uruguay’s pioneering law that lets pharmacies distribute pot. But she says there is no way she will.

In her 28 years as a pharmacist, she has been beaten, dragged across the floor and threatened by thieves at gunpoint and with a grenade. She fears that selling marijuana would only make her store a bigger target for robbers and burglars.

“You see their faces and you can tell right away that they are not consumers who are here just to buy” marijuana, Rilla said about the “suspicious people” who have recently been coming into her Montevideo pharmacy asking if she sells pot.

Investors jumping in during the Canadian cannabis industry's early days may find themselves wishing they'd waited a bit, as the current model for building a domestic industry is not sustainable. The same is true for U.S. operations.

When Washington, DC residents voted to legalize marijuana back in 2015, many stoners (while high, of course) probably imagined President Obama blowing O’s in the White House rose garden after a tough day at the office; however, due to the District’s lack of statehood, and the tempestuous relationship that exists between DC and Congress—even the President might have a hard time understanding the Chocolate City’s stance on the green.

Far removed from joints and bongs, marijuana smoking methods have truly entered the high-tech age. Beginning with tabletop devices like Storz and Bickel’s revolutionary Volcano vaporizer, the market has seen a greater demand for more portable, high-end devices that seem to have more in common with mobile phone technology than their paper and pipe ancestors.

The first and only medical marijuana dispensary in Fredericton believes the standards they hold their operation to will help to erase the negative stigma that is still surrounding marijuana usage.

Despite legalization not yet being a reality in Canada, HBB Medical Inc. opened in April.

Since then they say they have brought in over 400 members, all of which go through a stringent screening process to ensure they are legally permitted to access medical marijuana.

“We want to identify that mainstream medical dispensaries do have a place in society,” said Hank Merchant, HBB president of procedures. “We set standards above and beyond.”
