Local edible marijuana producer discusses new Washington state regulation

A new state law will change the way edible marijuana will be regulated. Edibles will soon be subject to the same oversight as other foods.

Some edible producers are concerned about how this will affect their business. Scott Whipps is the owner of Eleven Window Ventures in Spokane Valley. He said his is one of about a thousand businesses that grow marijuana and also make edibles throughout the state. He said the industry is very competitive.

"As a small company it's tough to compete and actually make money,” Whipps said. "Definitely pushes down what I can charge for my products greatly, and basically it's been a race to bottom in terms of product pricing."

Justice department says people in marijuana business can't use bankruptcy

People who make money from the marijuana industry can't use the federal bankruptcy courts when they get into financial trouble, says a Justice Department bankruptcy watchdog.

U.S. Trustee Program director Cliff White wrote a letter to trustees who handle consumer bankruptcy cases earlier this week reminding them that the drug is illegal under federal law and warning them not to handle any money from the sale of marijuana-related property.

The one-page letter, sent on Wednesday, said the Justice Department division has seen an increase in the number of bankruptcies where "marijuana assets" are disclosed.

Better know a marijuana stock: Aphria

If investors look around, they'll struggle to find an industry growing faster than legal marijuana.

Data from cannabis research firm ArcView shows that legal pot sales, including medical and recreational marijuana, grew by 34% in North America last year to $6.9 billion. That might sound like a lot, but ArcView also points out that $46.4 billion were conducted in black-market cannabis sales. There's still plenty of opportunity to attract these under-the-table consumers in the years to come, and this shouldn't be too tough with more and more U.S. states legalizing marijuana, and Canada possibly on the precipice of legalizing the drug nationally.

WeedMD Commences Trading

WeedMD Inc. came roaring out of the gates yesterday when it commenced trading on the TSX Venture Exchange under the symbol WMD.V.

WeedMD is a licensed producer of medical cannabis under the ACMPR and plans to be Canada’s first producer focused on the long-term and retirement sector by leveraging its deep industry relationships and expertise.

Management believes senior patients represent a significantly higher value market segment than typical ACMPR patients. This is due in large part to consistent treatment schedules and the cost-effective nature of patient acquisition and servicing associated with long-term care facilities.

Trump admin's anti-marijuana stance is leading to record marijuana sales

Colorado is continuing to set record marijuana sales—$235 million for the first two months of 2017, up 30 percent from the same period in 2016—and one shocking theory is emerging as to why retail figures are so robust: Donald J. Trump.

According to Marijuana Business Daily, which tracks industry trends, suggests that the Trump administration’s negative comments regarding legalization and regulation may be one factor behind the soaring growth. Reporter Eli McVey writes:

State Patrol in 2nd Year of Testing Roadside Marijuana Devices

Colorado State Patrol is in the process of adding to its arsenal the tools available to troopers that would confirm the presence of drugs in a driver’s system.

Officers rely on behavioral cues – probable cause – to pull over a driver: speeding up, slowing down, drifting into another lane.  From there, a roadside sobriety test “peels back” the next layer of impairment, much like a drunk driving test.  It’s those visual cues that law enforcement use to prosecute a person’s impairment.

“You have four legalized states, you’re gonna have four more legalized states in just a few months, and you even have the country of Canada going to legalization,” said CDOT Highway Safety Manager, Glenn Davis.  “We realized that we're probably gonna have a whole lot more customers."

Marijuana social clubs could become reality in Nevada

A bill allowing local governments to issue permits for marijuana social clubs has passed in the Nevada Senate.

The bill passed 12-9 Tuesday and next will be reviewed by the Assembly, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported (http://bit.ly/2plDbsV ).

The bill was mainly drafted for the tourism industry in Las Vegas. Tourists do not have a safe place to use recreational marijuana, which is legal in Nevada, lawmakers said.

Tourists will soon be able to purchase up to an ounce of marijuana, but will have no place to use it. The law that took effect Jan. 1 makes it so people can only consume pot at a private residence.
