New leveraged marijuana ETFs on the way

Investors looking to leverage the marijuana industry can soon do so, with three new exchange-traded funds (ETFs) set to launch later this summer.

Horizons ETF Management Canada Inc. filed preliminary documents with regulators last week to launch three new ETFs on the Toronto Stock Exchange that will focus on leveraging the cannabis sector.

Leveraged ETFs – also known as “double ETFs” – typically aim to deliver two or three times the return on their stated index, and carry a higher risk rating than typical ETFs.

What Cannabis Stocks and Valeant Pharmaceuticals Intl Inc. (TSX:VRX) Have in Common

In covering the cannabis mania which has taken the Canadian stock market by storm in recent years, the high levels of consolidation within the cannabis sector, categorized by increasingly unrealistic valuation multiples, is, to me, reminiscent of the bio-pharmaceutical sector just a few years ago. In early 2015, Valeant Pharmaceuticals Intl Inc. (TSX:VRX)(NYSE:VRX) could do no wrong. The company was buying companies at 30%, 40%, 50%, or higher premiums to valuations on a regular basis. Investors ignored the implications of the multiples Valeant chose to pay for its targets, choosing instead to focus on the future potential of the synergies of said…

From marijuana beer to pot cookies, Canadian companies creating cannabis edibles

Beer brewed with marijuana, baking mixes concocted to bring out the unique flavours of cannabis oil and good, old-fashioned pot cookies: Canadian companies are creating them all, but it's unclear when stores will legally be able to stock the edibles for recreational users.

Instead, business owners have been getting creative to manufacture, refine and sell their products.

Ottawa has pledged that recreational marijuana will become legal sometime this year and the Senate recently approved the pot legalization bill. But the federal government has said the sale of edible cannabis products will not be legal immediately.

That hasn't stopped Canadian companies for entering the market.

Chinatown residents rally against cannabis stores: AB

With the legalization of cannabis likely only months away across Canada, some residents in Calgary’s Chinatown community voiced their displeasure on Saturday over the prospect of cannabis stores opening in their neighbourhood.

Hosted by the Calgary Chinese Union, the rally also included a petition that will be sent to the city.

“We want to keep the Chinatown clean, and healthy, and safe,” said Calgary Chinese Union Vice President Cynthia Shi.

A main sticking point is that they don’t think cannabis stores are a fit for Chinatown, and they feel they were not consulted enough.

Aurora Cannabis is acting like a drunken sailor, Frank Mersch says

Aurora Cannabis (TSX:ACB) may be making waves these days with its high profile acquisitions, but can the company pull it all together come rec legalization? The jury is still out, but there’s a lot to worry about, says Frank Mersch, chief strategist with Jamekk Capital Management, whose company is shorting ACB.

Earlier this week, licensed producer Aurora Cannabis announced an agreement to purchase cannabis research and product testing company Anandia Laboratories in an all-stock deal valued at $115 million. The news comes on the heels of other major purchases by Edmonton-based Aurora, including cannabis companies MedReleaf and CanniMed as well as stakes in retail liquor stores, organic waste technology and softgel capsule production.

Blowing smoke: Does Aurora Cannabis really know what it’s doing?

In two years, Aurora Cannabis has gone from penny-stock company to a $5-billion darling on the TSX, thanks to a dizzying string of deals. But does CEO Terry Booth just talk a good game?

Cannabis entrepreneur Terry Booth wants to be the king of pot. Today, he is more like a Trumpian master of superlatives.

Ask him about the quality of marijuana his company produces and he’ll assure you it’s “the best bud without a doubt.” His cultivators? “The best growers in the world.” His executive team? “Better than anyone else’s.” Everything is the best or the biggest.

HRM advised to ban outdoor marijuana plants and hire 8 pot bylaw officers

Enforcing the proposed municipal rules would cost nearly $1M a year, staff report finds.

A new report says the Halifax Regional Municipality will have to hire eight additional bylaw officers to enforce new municipal cannabis rules.

If council decides to follow all of the staff recommendations, it would cost about $970,000 a year.

Once finalized, federal laws will let people grow four plants on their own residential property.

The HRM report cites concerns about the associated smell. They recommend only allowing plants to be grown inside the home.

B.C. - based 420 Consulting partners with Newfoundland hydroponic and garden centre to advise clients about medical marijuana

If you’ve driven past the Torbay Road Mall recently, you may have noticed that one of those big black roadside signs suggests that medical marijuana prescriptions are available inside at Home Grown Hydroponic and Indoor Garden Centre.

Technically speaking, the prescriptions are not available inside — there’s no doctor or naturopath hanging out in the back room with a pad ready to dole out scripts for high-potency cannabis strains.

Should Hamilton allow “monster” marijuana greenhouses?

City bureaucrats are floating the idea of allowing rural pot-growing greenhouses that are bigger than Lime Ridge mall.

The City of Hamilton is floating the idea of allowing rural pot-growing greenhouses bigger than Lime Ridge mall.

The potential policy change would allow legal medical marijuana growers to build greenhouses up to 90,000 square metres in size, or close to 1 million square feet. By comparison, the city's largest mall complex at Lime Ridge has 814,000 square feet of store space.

The option will be discussed at a Tuesday planning meeting, but not voted on until public feedback is gathered for a future report to council. Such a change would be a radical U-turn for a city that currently restricts rural grow-ops to 22,000 square feet.
