Like a sommelier of cannabis, a budtender is a trained weed expert

Grant Sanderson teaches cannabis enthusiasts how to sell legal weed.

The regional manager, cannabis division, of Alcanna, which runs the Nova Cannabis chain of legal dispensaries in Ontario and Alberta, explains regulatory compliance, methods of consumption and the lineage of more than 50 different strains. He’s being doing this since June, and more than 200 people have graduated from his four-day program to become legal dealers or “budtenders.”

He’s never had to kick anyone out of class for being stoned.

Why Aurora Cannabis may have made a big mistake by not partnering with a beverage company

Cannabis-infused beverages could soon be a big hit. Being able to drink a beverage, get a buzz, and not be hungover the next day could prove to be an easy sell to people who consume alcohol. While the segment hasn't taken off in the U.S. where beverages still represent a very small fraction of cannabis sales, that might not be the case for much longer.

When will the big Canadian cannabis producers become profitable?

You'll hear most of the big Canadian cannabis producers talk a lot about revenue growth. However, it's a different story when it comes to profits. In most cases, any reported profit for one of the five biggest Canadian producers will come with an asterisk: a paper profit fueled by a one-time gain rather than true operating profitability.

Here's where the next 42 Ontario cannabis stores could open

Ontario has released results of its second lottery selecting 42 operators hoping to run cannabis shops in the province.

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) said it received 4,684 applicants in the draw.

Unlike the first lottery held earlier this year, which faced criticism for not including a merit component, applications for the second draw were required to show evidence that they have secured retail space that could be used as a store if they are selected, and that they have enough capital to open it.

Those selected will have until Aug. 28 to pay licensing fees, and provide a letter of credit for $50,000 to the regulator.
