Massachusetts medical marijuana program faces deficit over $1 million

BOSTON - The state's medical marijuana program is projected to run a $1.17 million deficit in fiscal year 2015 despite a state law requiring the program to pay for itself, according to the program's annual report.

Nichole Snow, deputy director of Massachusetts Patient Advocacy Alliance, a medical marijuana patient advocacy group, said the deficit "shows that the people who were in charge originally really didn't put enough thought into it."

Scott Zoback, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, said, "The administration is in the process of revamping a poorly functioning medical marijuana program it inherited in order to best serve patients safely and ensure the system is living up to the law passed by Massachusetts voters."

London stakes its claim as global bitcoin hub

(Reuters) - London, center of the $5-trillion-a-day global currency market, now wants to be home to a controversial upstart - bitcoin.

British authorities have come out in support of digital currencies in the name of promoting financial innovation, while proposing that regulations should be drawn up to prevent their use in crime.

But it is technophiles who are leading the drive to make London a real-world hub for trade in web-based "cryptocurrencies", of which bitcoin is the original and still most popular.

The marijuana industry's battle against the IRS

Millions of Americans rushed to finish their taxes in the hours just before the midnight deadline Wednesday. But for business-owners in the cannabis industry, a years-long tax battle is far from over.

Supporters of legal marijuana cited tax revenue as big factor in pushing through laws that have allowed medical marijuana sales in 23 states and recreational pot in four. But the businesses that grow and sell marijuana in those states are also staring at a steep federal tax bill, especially when compared with businesses in other industries.

Canada: MMPR Guide to Packaging and Labeling your Cannabis Flower

So you have a nice batch of freshly cured flower sitting in a sealed 1000 gram nitrogen pack bag, and you’d like to turn this product into packaged inventory so you can sell it to your patients.

"Uber for marijuana" startup raises $75m from Snoop Dogg and other investors

A marijuana delivery start-up has raised $10m (£6.8m) in a funding round which included investments from Snoop Dogg's Casa Verde Capital and Silicon Valley firm DCM Ventures among others.

Eaze, which has been dubbed the "Uber for weed", does not directly supply marijuana, but instead connects California medical marijuana card-carriers with local dispensaries, claiming it can hook users up with the drug in under 10 minutes. Technically, it is not breaking any law, even though recreational use of marijuana is still illegal.

The firm became the first marijuana startup to attract international investors when it raised $1.5m in November, and has made 3,000 deliveries since its launch.

Preliminary results from Israeli study: Cannabis delays cancer development

New research shows - with cautious optimism - that cannabis can kill or slow the development of cancer cells.

Medical cannabis is well known to cancer patients. A large number of Israelis receive it as part of their palliative care for dealing with the symptoms of the disease, as cannabis has been found to be effective in relieving chronic pain, nausea and loss of appetite.

Scientists from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa have been researching completely different possibilities for the use of cannabis by cancer patients – as an active treatment against the development of the disease itself. A precedent-setting study examined how dozens of strains of cannabis affect the development and growth of hundreds of types of cancer cells.
