Growers looking to increase potency of cannabis plants may consider adding ultraviolet light to their growing environment.

Is this a smart move?

It’s well-established that UV light in all forms can damage plant tissues. UVB rays specifically damage proteins and nucleic acids in the cells, which harms cell reproduction and plant metabolism.

Cannabis plants respond to this stress by increasing production of trichomes (which biosynthesize cannabinoids). Trichomes help the plant reflect light in an effort to protect the plant’s flowers from damaging UV light.

Trichomes are small appendages that look like hairs. They are produced by marijuana, and other plants. Female marijuana plants produce certain trichomes that are a rich source of THC. These trichomes can be found in their largest concentration on the buds. They start out clear, turn a milky color, then turn amber (light brown).

The trichomes in picture 1 are clear. After the plant has flowered for a few weeks, the trichomes start to turn a milky color (picture 2). After a few more weeks, they will be totally milky in color. In the later stages of flowering, trichomes will turn to a light brown color (picture 3). The amount of time required to get to this point depends on the marijuana strain and the growing conditions.

With drug laws changing all the time, it’s hard for police sniffer dogs to keep up with what they’re supposed to find and what they aren’t. That’s why police forces are turning to insects to sniff out narcotics.

An odd scientific paper in PLoS One today details the very first attempts to get insects to become drug sniffers. The researchers tested three insects — the grapevine moth, the hissing cockroach and the western honeybee — just to assess how well they could differentiate the smell of one substance from another. The bees won, because their antennae make great “biosensors”, the researchers report.
