Lime-Hemp Groningen promising for earthquake resistant building

Groningen, The Netherlands – EcoBouwSalland, HempFlax and Sanger IBCT are studying how home insulation based on a mixture of hemp and lime hemp behaves during earthquakes. This research is supported by the NAM (Dutch Petroleum Company). Earlier tests had shown that the product has a low modulus of elasticity. This means that it gives way, instead of tearing.

The flexibility of lime is well known in the construction industry. And certainly in Groningen, where limestone mortar plays an essential role in the architecture the traditional barns, built from stone and mortar. These walls grow with time without dilatation. If crack appears, it most often closes in on itself under the influence of rain and humidity.

Clovis police use marijuana goggles to educate public

CLOVIS, Calif. (KFSN) --

Police across the Valley have their eyes out for drunk drivers. But in this day and age, it's not just alcohol they're worried about.

"What's happening down the road is a lot of people are overmedicating themselves, and that's where they start becoming impaired. We're taking a special look at that, and it is a violation of the law," Clovis Police Officer Mark Bradford said.

Bradford is one of six drug recognition experts in the department. Officers are seeing a disturbing trend of more people being arrested for impaired driving. Recently, the department got a new tool to educate the public: marijuana goggles.

"A lot of people are really amazed on how much they feel impaired just putting those goggles on," Bradford said.

Henry Ford Designed a Car made of Hemp: More Fuel Efficient, More Durable: It Disappeared

Henry Ford was an innovator ahead of his time. By 1941, Ford had been working on ways to invent more fuel efficient and durable vehicles that could operate with alternative fuel sources. He came up with a hemp-bodied prototype automobile, which he foresaw running on alcohol generated from agricultural products such as Hemp.

Despite the breakthrough, hemp production was inhibited by draconian marijuana laws designed to protect fossil fuels and the production of standard textiles and materials. Unfortunately, mass production of the hemp car never happened.

In this video, the car is beaten with a hammer while no heavy damage is inflicted upon the car. Watch.

MMJRecs Makes Getting Medical Marijuana Safer, Easier, and Faster

LOS ANGELES -- Founded by a doctor and a patient, MMJRecs.com is a brand-new app that enables California medical-cannabis patients to apply for and receive doctor recommendations via their mobile devices. It is staffed by a team of licensed physicians, complies with all HIPAA regulations, and employs the same cyber-security as banks, bringing the highest possible level of safety, comfort and relief to the ill.

Patients can now receive doctor recommendations via the MMJRecs website, and the company next month will announce the launch of its app, which will enable patients to apply using their smart phones. The entire process can take as little as 20 minutes, and no office visit is required.

Scientists Working to Prevent Monsanto from Monopolizing on Cannabis Strains, But Can They Stop It?

Scientists are working to map the complete DNA structure of the cannabis plant in order to prevent major agricultural seed companies, like Monsanto, from securing exclusive patents on specific strains.

Late last week, Mowgli Holmes, Chief Scientific Officer of Phylos Bioscience, the company overseeing the Cannabis Genome Project, explained to those in attendance of TechFestNW in Portland, Oregon that cannabis should be viewed comparatively to another major American cash crop: Corn.

He said that both of these commodities were domesticated by humans around 10,000 years ago, and that, like corn, cannabis was spread “to every corner of the world,” pushing the scope of its biological reach “to a point in the evolutionary landscape that it never would’ve gotten on its own.”

Botanists conduct first large-scale genetic study of marijuana, hemp

A study by Canadian researchers is providing a clearer picture of the evolutionary history and genetic organization of cannabis, a step that could have agricultural, medical and legal implications for this valuable crop.

"Even though hemp and marijuana are important crops, knowledge about cannabis is lacking because of its status as a controlled drug," said Jonathan Page, a University of British Columbia botanist who co-led the first large-scale study of the genetic diversity of cannabis. The research was conducted together with Sean Myles, a population geneticist at Dalhousie University.

Two Stocks Focused on Developing Cannabis-Based Cancer Treatments

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) updated its website to include various studies revealing how cannabis may inhibit tumor growth by killing cells, blocking cell growth, and blocking the development of blood vessels that tumors need to grow. The institute released the following statement after updating its website:

“A laboratory study of cannabidiol (CBD) in estrogen receptor positive and estrogen receptor negative breast cancer cells showed that it caused cancer cell death while having little effect on normal breast cells. Studies in mouse models of metastatic breast cancer showed that cannabinoids may lessen the growth, number, and spread of tumors.”

Marijuana classification muddled and confused, says UBC expert

Tests on marijuana from around the world show their genetic makeup may be far from different from their purported background.

“There’s a lot of confusion and a lot of chaos in the system now,” says Jonathan Page, a University of B.C. botanist who helped lead the first large-scale study of the genetic diversity of cannabis. His most recent work is published today in the online journal Plos One.

“Right now, the genetic identity of a marijuana strain cannot be accurately determined by its name or reported ancestry,” Page said in a news release. “Ultimately, we require a practical, accurate and more reliable classification system of this plant.”
