Uruguayan Government Promotes Medical Marijuana Research

MONTEVIDEO – The Uruguayan government wants to spur research on medical marijuana under the 2013 legislation that decriminalized cannabis in the country, Milton Romani, secretary-general of the National Drugs Board, told EFE.

After a videoconference with Israeli experts, Romani said that Uruguay’s legal framework on marijuana “provides a comparative advantage” over other countries in developing medical uses of cannabis.

Dr. Itai Gur-Arie, head of Sheba Pain Clinic, said research on medicinal marijuana faces obstacles in Israel, where the substance is still banned.

CAMH studying the effect of marijuana on driving ... by getting people high

Scientists at CAMH are getting people high, and then putting them behind the wheel -- of a driving simulator.

If Justin Trudeau's Liberal government legalizes marijuana in Canada, research by drug experts at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto may play a role in how it's enforced.

For the last two years, scientists Robert Mann and Gina Stoduto have been giving test subjects a joint, putting them behind the wheel of a driving simulator, and recording what happens under controlled conditions.

"The number one drug found in dead and injured drivers after alcohol is cannabis," Mann said. "Teenage drivers in high school are now more likely to drive after cannabis use than they are after drinking."

Silicon Valley's Unlikely New Frontier

Keith McCarty surveyed the sharing economy before he conceived his mobile-app startup last year. Uber and Lyft covered rides. GrubHub, GRUB 3.01 % Munchery, and other apps handled food, and Postmates delivered everything else. So Mr. McCarty looked for something just as consumable, deliverable, and profitable but not already taken.

He settled on pot.

Technology in the trade generally stops at Microsoft MSFT -0.81 % Excel for planning and record-keeping. Now it is joining the data revolution.

The Pesticide Dilemma

The use of pesticides in cannabis cultivation is a web of unregulated, high-risk confusion. What’s next?

State health inspectors entered New Jersey’s largest marijuana dispensary in August. Tucked away inside a cabinet, they found a sealed container of pesticide.

Unused as it was, the container landed the dispensary in trouble, and highlighted an issue that is creating legal and regulatory waves across the industry, including a first-of-its-kind class action lawsuit in Colorado over the use of chemical substances to improve the quality and yield of the cannabis plant.

The 'Keurig for marijuana' is finally here

Introducing the CannaCloud, not to be confused with your coffee thermos.

A year-old startup called CannaKorp announced last week it's developing the world's first single-serve, pod-based marijuana vaporizer system. Dubbed the CannaCloud, it's essentially the Keurig of cannabis.

The CannaCloud could bring a level of precision and ease to marijuana consumption that could help elevate pot above its crunchy, hippie stigma, if the device finds mainstream success.

Flowhub: Nipping Inventory Management Problems In The Bud

Big Ideas

In 2014, Kyle Sherman made a significant career decision: to delve into the world of cannabis. Leaving behind a successful advertising career in Los Angeles, the long-time entrepreneur relocated his family to Denver, Colorado, the spot to eat, sleep, and breathe the real-time culture of the industry he was passionate to learn more about.

During his time at a commercial grow-op, Sherman realized the technology used to manage cannabis grow-ops and dispensaries was lagging behind. Compliance issues in daily operations were costing time, energy, and dollars, which he found stifling.

Business is booming at the Harvard of pot in California

OAKLAND, Calif. — Jean Kennedy has a BS in biology and a master’s in special education. Now, she’s trying to decide what to do with her third degree: a certificate of achievement from Oaksterdam University, the Harvard Business School of marijuana.

“I’m Italian,” said Kennedy, 56, a retired high school biology teacher with graying hair and a heavy New York accent. “You know Italians, we grow tomatoes. Maybe I’ll grow some plants.”

Horticulture 102 is one of the many subjects Kennedy studies at Oaksterdam, whose storefront campus is set amid the hip cafes, restaurants and cannabis dispensaries of downtown Oakland. Founded in 2007, the school sees itself as a training ground for citizen advocates in the fight to legalize marijuana.
