Speedy cannabis spit test could spot people driving while high

An erratic driver is pulled over by the police. The officer smells a hint of marijuana, so dabs a cotton swab in the driver’s mouth to collect some saliva. Just 3 minutes later, still by the side of the road, the result comes back: every millilitre of spit contains 5 nanograms of THC, weed’s active ingredient.

This scenario may soon be commonplace thanks to a new test developed in the lab of Shan Wang at Stanford University in California.

San Diego Medical Pot Expo Focuses on Innovation

Conference puts spotlight on biotech, science in industry.

An 8-year-old girl and a panel of former professional athletes were among those speaking on the final day of the first medical marijuana conference ever held at the San Diego Convention Center.

Unlike other marijuana-related events, such as the Hempcon and the Cannabis Cup, there was no weed or products containing its psychoactive component, THC, at the two-day Southern California Cannabis Conference and Expo. With 210 booths, panels of speakers and up to 3,000 attendees per day, the expo’s focus was more biotech than bongs, more science than stoners, organizers and participants said.

Can Pot Save the Economy? Tommy Chong Sees Green

Marijuana is turning into big business, so it's no surprise stoner icon Tommy Chong is getting involved. The Cheech and Chong alum talks to CNET about the industry's growth, the poetry of Twitter and telepathic note-taking apps.

Tommy Chong's business has always been weed. Now he's hoping it'll grow like one too.

You might remember the 78-year-old counterculture icon as the bearded half of the stoner comedy duo Cheech and Chong. In his decades-long career, he's become synonymous with cannabis. In the best of times, he was accepting a Best Comedy Album Grammy for the pair's 1973 album "Los Cochinos." In the worst of times, he was jailed for sending bongs across state lines.

Powdered THC Packs May Be The Most Convenient Way To Create Edibles

Making edibles can be an ordeal. Even basic recipes tend to use cannabutter or oil, which takes time, and lots of product, to create. Given the choice between labour-intensive kitchen science, and busting out the vaporizer, most of us choose the latter.

Baker raises $1.6 million to help marijuana dispensaries get customers in the door

The average seed round in the nascent cannabis industry in the U.S. hovers around $1 million, according to hemp and cannabis-focused investment research by Poseidon Asset Management.

But Denver-based Baker Technologies Inc. has raised $1.6 million in seed funding for software that helps marijuana dispensaries win new customers, eliminate long lines in stores, and retain and reward their best customers for loyalty.

Founded in 2015, Baker originally began as an “order ahead” app to let customers reserve and go pick up the marijuana products they wanted for medical or legal recreational use.

Why Florida's Medical Marijuana System Is Ripe for Corporate Takeover

In June 2014, the disgraced former CEO of Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) signed Florida’s medical marijuana bill into law. It was a fitting beginning to a regulatory process that has been marred by shadowy fraud in the selection of lucrative vertically integrated licenses in what could become one of the largest medical marijuana markets in the country. The state appears poised to double down upon the fraud, and in keeping with Governor Rick Scott’s legacy of putting healthcare profits before people, some of the new law’s provisions could shield corporate revenues at the expense of fragile patients.

The Hemp Industry Can Reduce Our Carbon Footprint

The benefits of cultivating and processing hemp domestically go beyond the economic advantages. Making hemp farming federally legal and increasing the number of crops nationwide could make a powerful impact on our efforts to prevent global warming.

Last week, Colorado Hemp Company and NoCo Hemp Expo hosted Hemp On The Slope, an event in Collbran, Colorado, meant to educate and inform the community on the benefits of domestic hemp cultivation. Among the most significant of the benefits? Industrial hemp farming reduces our carbon footprint and thereby combats global warming.
