Weed Gets in the Way of FBI Tech Talent Search

The FBI has struggled for years to attract enough fresh hacker talent to defend America's computers.

One problem? A culture clash between elite coders who are attracted to casual — or even rebellious workplaces — and the agency's bureaucratic reputation.

Or, as FBI Director James B. Comey recalled his daughter's explanation of the issue at a recent speech: “Dad, the problem is you’re 'the Man,' " she said. "Who would want to work for 'the Man?' ”

His daughter was right, he said. But the agency is trying to get more hip to attract recruits who will help the agency keep pace with a digital landscape in constant flux, according to Comey.

So how DID this British cop become America's cannabis king?

During almost five years on the beat, patrolling some of the roughest parts of London, Mike Abbott arrested dozens of people for drug offences.

As a young recruit he picked up people carrying cannabis on the street in areas such as Brixton, and later participated in undercover operations against major suppliers.

‘The stench of hash was becoming more prevalent,’ he says. ‘My job was to uphold the law and cannabis, like other drugs, was illegal.’

Ex-Met Police officer Mike Abbott runs one of the most successful medical marijuana firms in the United States, Columbia Care

Buying Biotech Cannabis Stocks on Weakness

The cannabis sector came down from its highs on Friday as global markets plunged on heightened concerns over higher interest rates.

The Nasdaq was the hardest hit and the exchange fell more than 2.5%, while the Dow and S&P 500 dropped more than 2% each.

What to Expect Today?

This market is poised to open lower this morning as global markets are still concerned over a possible rate hike when the FOMC meets next week.

We expect the United States market to trade weak as investors wait to hear from Fed Governor Lael Brainard at 1:15pm EST. The reason why her speech is significant is because Brainard is a voting member of the FOMC and she is typically known to be a dove, meaning that she is less likely to raise interest rates.

This Marijuana Stock Has Big News on Tap

Two trials have already demonstrated that marijuana medicine developer GW Pharmaceuticals PLC's (NASDAQ: GWPH) Epidiolex can reduce seizure rates in rare forms of epilepsy, but data that could confirm previous results and boost confidence in a potential FDA filing for Epidiolex next year is expected by the end of the quarter. If results from this trial in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome patients echo findings from its prior study, then GW Pharmaceuticals could soon be in a position to reshape how doctors treat this rare form of epilepsy.

The Difficulty Of Enforcing Laws Against Driving While High

This story starts with a stay-at-home-mom from the Denver suburbs.

Her name is Abby McLean. She's 30 and lives in Northglenn, Colo. She was driving home from a late dinner with a friend two years ago when she came upon a DUI roadside checkpoint.

"I hadn't drank or smoked anything, so I was like, 'Let's go through the checkpoint,' " she recalls.

McLean is a regular marijuana user but she insists she never drives while high.

Still, the cop at the checkpoint tells her he smells marijuana and that her eyes are bloodshot. Eventually he whips out handcuffs and McClean freaks.

"Like, massive panic attack. And, 'Oh, my God, I have babies at home. I need to get home. I can't go to jail!' "
