Michigan marijuana legalization group to submit ballot language, 'crowdfund' campaign

LANSING, MI -- A new group seeking to legalize recreational marijuana in Michigan has a jump start in the race to the 2016 ballot.

The Michigan Cannabis Coalition -- one of three groups that may launch pot legalization petition drives -- plans to submit proposed language to the Secretary of State on Thursday for review by the Board of State Canvassers prior to public circulation.

"We've taken a look at everything that did and didn't work in Colorado, everything that did and didn't work in Washington state, and then we've taken a look at what people are going to need to make it palatable," said spokesperson Matt Marsden, referencing recreational marijuana initiatives in other states.

The proposal would provide a framework for the legal cultivation and sale of marijuana. It will include various regulations designed to address public safety concerns and would establish an independent oversight board.
