We Need More Research On Medical Marijuana

A new study revealed that there was “moderate-quality evidence” to support the use of cannabinoid compounds for the treatment of chronic pain and spasticity. The same report also found that there was “lower-quality evidence” suggesting that cannabinoids were associated with improvements in nausea and vomiting chemotherapy, sleep disorders and Tourette syndrome.

Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), a peer-reviewed medical produced by the American Medical Association (AMA), the analysis reviewed 79 trials that fit the criteria for assessment. These studies included 6,462 participants.

Growing cannabis 'more profitable', chicken farmer tells court

A farmer has admitted growing cannabis plants worth ÂŁ109,000 because "they made more money" than rearing chickens.

Edward James, 68, was found with hundreds of plants on his land at Bratton Fleming, Barnstaple, Devon.

He told police growing the Class B drug was "more profitable than chickens", Exeter Crown Court heard.

Recorder Mr Rufus Taylor adjourned the case until 30 July, and ordered pre-sentence reports be prepared by the Probation Service.

Sean Brunton, prosecuting, said in light of James' guilty plea to producing cannabis, his not guilty plea to a second charge of possession with intent to supply had been accepted.

Gareth Evans, defending, said James is in poor health and has strong personal mitigation.

Norman Lamb: more than half of Tory ministers have taken drugs

Liberal Democrat leadership hopeful Norman Lamb has said that more than half of current government ministers “almost certainly” tried illegal drugs in their younger years.

Speaking at an event organised by the Institute of Public Policy Research thinktank on Wednesday evening, the MP for North Norfolk described the UK’s current drugs laws as pathetic and a “monumental failure of public policy”.

“We have the crazy situation that, almost certainly, more than half of this government – half of the government ministers in a Conservative government – will have taken drugs in their younger years,” said Lamb, a former care minister under the coalition government.

UK: Jail sentence cut for cannabis-growing war veteran

Scott Darroch was caught with 150 plants worth more than ÂŁ20,000.

A WAR veteran suffering combat stress who was jailed for growing cannabis has had his three-year sentence cut after judges ruled it was excessive

Scott Darroch was caught with 150 plants worth more than ÂŁ20,000 in his isolated farmhouse in Skelmorlie, Ayrshire, in April 2014.

In January, Sheriff Shirley Foran jailed the former Royal Engineer - who served in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo - after he admitted producing and being concerned in supplying cannabis.

Kilmarnock Sheriff Court had heard Darroch, 42, suffered from severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and often checked streets for roadside bombs, believing he was still on active service.

War on drugs? It might be more sensible to legalise them

ON THE surface at least, closing 'legal high' shops in Plymouth seems a victory for common sense.

The unregulated sale of 'new psychoactive substances', the long-term effects of which are largely unknown, is clearly a public health issue.

However, the proposed legislation to ban these substances – the Pyschoactive Substances Bill 2015 – highlights just how schizophrenic the UK's drug laws really are.

The Bill, currently being scrutinised by the House of Lords, defines a 'psychoactive substance' as anything capable of affecting a person's emotional state.

How Britain's khat ban devastated an entire Kenyan town

Mild stimulant used to be Maua’s most valuable export, bringing prosperity to all involved. A year since it was outlawed, the local economy has been devastated

In a quiet and unassuming town tucked away in a hilly part of eastern Kenya, the British home secretary Theresa May’s name is spoken with barely concealed anger. Since her role in the ban of the town’s most valuable export, she’s become a universally vilified figure.

For more than two decades, Maua enjoyed booming business propelled by the growth and sale of khat, known locally as miraa, a popular herb whose leaves and stems are chewed for the mild high they offer.

Longton cannabis grower claimed he would have turned his crop into butter

CANNABIS user David Parker grew more than 50 plants which he claimed he would have mixed with butter and eaten.

The 27-year-old claimed he grew the drug for pain relief, saying he would smoke some but turn the rest into 'cannabutter' to use when cooking.

Parker pleaded guilty to producing cannabis but denied he would have sold any of the drug. However, that was not accepted by the Crown Prosecution Service and a trial of issue was held at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court today.

The judge found the defendant would have sold some of the crop but accepted some was for personal use.

Police discovered the cannabis factory after raiding the defendant's home in Sutherland Road, Longton, on April 11 last year.
