Legal Loophole Allowing for Low-THC Cannabis Sale in Switzerland

A legal form of cannabis, C-Pure, is being bought, sold, and consumed in Switzerland due to an inadvertent legislative loophole – throwing into question the wider ability and purpose of policing cannabis.

C-Pure is legal under Swiss law as it contains less than one per cent THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the main psychoactive constituent of cannabis. Dario Tobler, director of Bio Can AGOrganic – the company that created C-Pure – says that the product “has no intoxicating effect” because of its low THC content.

Switzerland: Zurich Legislature is in Favour of Medical Cannabis

Zurich residents with illness may have a card that allows them to acquire cannabis more easily.

The medical cannabis user should be able to obtain it more easily in the city of Zurich. The City Council of Zurich followed up a postulate of the Greens by 80 votes to 36 last Wednesday .

It is already possible for patients to calm their pain by means of cannabis products. However, they require an authorization from the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH).

But the procedure to obtain the latter is so complicated that many patients go and supply themselves with cannabis by illegal means, explained the Zurich Greens. Criminalizing these people makes no sense.

Why WHO Needs a Radical Rethink of Its Draconian Approach to Cannabis

Cannabis is hugely popular. 182m people use cannabis across the world and, with this level of exposure, the way cannabis is regulated matters. As does the evidence of risks and benefits to health which underpins regulation.

Sometimes saying nothing is as telling as saying something. Silence can suggest retaining the status quo. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has been silent about the international regulatory controls on cannabis since its inception in 1935. The past 80 years have brought dramatic advances in scientific knowledge about cannabis, so it is odd that it has not provided updated advice about its legal status.
