Israel: Marijuana decriminalization would penalize users under 21

New details on the legal efforts to decriminalize marijuana that emerged on Monday revealed that Knesset members are pushing to allow Israelis over the age of 21 to hold up to one plant, 15 seeds, and five grams of pot without penalty.

Under the move spearheaded by freshman MK Yinon Magal (Jewish Home party), the plant would be legal for private use, with individuals allowed to keep small amounts of cannabis and derivative products in their homes.

Lawmakers have high hopes for cannabis decriminalization

Joint left-right support for rehashed bill makes green light likelier than ever for recreational use

Don’t expect it to be hitting the shelves just yet, but newly proposed legislation could see Israel decriminalize cannabis for recreational use.

Under the move spearheaded by freshman MK Yinon Magal (Jewish Home party), the plant would be legal for private use, with individuals allowed to keep small amounts of cannabis and derivative products in their homes.

Similar bills have been shot down in the past, but legalization activists have high hopes this time, after a group of eight Knesset members from across the political spectrum indicated they would support the budding proposal.

Farmers lodge legal petition for medical marijuana licenses

Farmers are demanding that the government act upon its December 2013 decision and issue additional licenses without delay.

A group of 10 farmers interested in growing medical marijuana recently filed a petition to the Jerusalem District Court, demanding that the Health Ministry increase the licenses available for producing the crop.

Although a government decision was made on the subject in December 2013, officials have still failed to issue licenses for those looking to begin growing cannabis for medical purposes, the farmers argued in their petition.

Because they have not yet been able to join the industry, the farmers said that damage is being caused to themselves, to those patients who may need the marijuana, and to the principle of fair competition.

Israeli Army considers easing up on soldiers caught smoking marijuana off base

Currently, soldiers caught using or possessing drugs, even on leave and only once, are prosecuted and, if convicted, given a criminal record - a much harsher policy than that of police toward civilians.

Army policies regarding consumption of light drugs are being re-evaluated, with an eye toward softening them, by military prosecutors. Particular attention is being given to light drugs consumed off base. Haaretz has learned that the possibility of softening army attitudes towards soldiers who are caught using light drugs on a one-time basis in civilian settings is being considered. Prevailing opinion is that such cases should no longer be automatically and indiscriminately transferred to military courts for prosecution.

Israel's Stance on Medical Marijuana

Israel, a nation rich in history and diversity, holds its reputation when it comes to medical marijuana research as well. It is the home of “the father of medical marijuana,” Professor Raphael Mechoulam at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in the 1960s, JNS.org reported.
