One of them, a Minneapolis-based company called Vireo Health, which produces “pharmaceutical-grade cannabis-derived medicine,” announced Wednesday that all of its products had received kosher certification from the Orthodox Union.

Israel: Cannabis opponents take a hit as top ethicist calls for legalization

Israel’s preeminent expert on ethics and philosphy voiced support Tuesday for easing limits on the use of medical marijuana and — with appropriate regulation — legalizing the drug for recreational use.

Speaking to the Knesset Committee on Controlled Substances, Professor Asa Kasher said restrictions on the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes went against the principles of medical ethics, and argued doctors should be given the freedom to prescribe the pain relieving drug even if other options have not been explored.

Dr. Mechoulam Talks About the Future of Cannabis Research

Israeli scientist Dr. Raphael Mechoulam established modern cannabis research almost single-handedly, first when he elucidated the structure of CBD in 1963 and then again in 1964 when he isolated and described THC. After a career in organic chemistry spanning 50 years and with numerous other important discoveries into the nature of marijuana under his belt, the father of pot research opened up to Cannabis Now about the past, present and possible future of medicine.

The Outsourcing of American Marijuana Research

In 1964, Raphael Mechoulam rode a public bus from Tel Aviv back to his lab at Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot while holding 11 pounds of Lebanese hashish in a plastic bag. He received his giant stash—the first of many over the next 50 years—from a police officer who had confiscated it from smugglers. “Advantages of living in a small country,” the chemist, now 85, says with a mischievous smirk.

Israeli Vets See Empty Promise in Medical Marijuana Program

After years of research into the question, in July of last year Israeli authorities made post-traumatic stress disorder the only psychiatric condition for which the Health Ministry will approve the use of medical marijuana. The decision, backed by the Israel Psychiatric Association, was a cause for optimism among many Israeli veterans suffering from PTSD.

Medical Marijuana Is Legal for PTSD in Israel, but Good Luck Getting It

Many doctors, however, say the clinical and scientific evidence is insufficient for a wider recommendation of the drug.

In July last year, post-traumatic stress disorder became the only psychiatric condition for which the Health Ministry approves the use of medical marijuana. The decision, backed by the Israel Psychiatric Association, was a cause for optimism among many Israelis suffering from PTSD.

But it wasn’t long before difficulties cropped up, like finding a psychiatrist to recommend cannabis and obtaining a permit from the Health Ministry. In public clinics psychiatrists don’t recommend medical marijuana or make haste in filling out the necessary forms. In private clinics the situation isn’t much better.

Poll shows rising support for Cannabis decriminalization among Israeli college students

Vast majority of students support decriminalization of the drug.

If it were up to college students in Israel, policy on the regulation on Cannabis would be drastically different, at least according to the findings of a recent poll.

As it stands today, Israeli law doesn’t differentiate between “hard drugs” like Heroin and Cocaine, and drugs generally considered less dangerous, such as Cannabis. According to the poll carried out by the National Union of Israeli Students, 89% of students would like to see Israeli law changed to reflect this perception that differentiates between the two types of drugs.

The poll surveyed over 10,000 students at institutions across the country.
