Genetically modified marijuana in Mexico? Cartel henchmen in lab coats producing super cannabis? Not quite. But Mexican marijuana producers are probably becoming more sophisticated in response to changing consumer habits and competition from legal U.S. growers.

Last July, Mexican authorities dismantled a large and sophisticated illegal marijuana "grow operation" in Jalisco. At first glance, this seemingly commonplace headline went unnoticed, except for the fact that nearly all news outlets that reported it cited Mexico’s first “genetically modified” cannabis crop.

Could it be true that Mexican drug trafficking organizations are using cutting-edge technology, including genetic engineering, to cultivate ever more potent pot?

At first, images of cartel henchmen in lab coats splicing genes to make “Roundup Ready” cannabis come to mind. As scary as this sounds, it isn’t exactly true....
