St. Patrick’s Day is, depending on who you ask, a Christian feast day to honor the patron saint of Ireland, a worldwide campaign to showcase Ireland and its culture, or an excuse to get totally hammered in public with zero regrets. People take to the streets in cities around the world to proudly proclaim their Irish heritage. Rivers run green and Guinness flows as parades march past onlookers… Some of whom inevitably get very, very drunk.

NORTH BONNEVILLE, Wash. — Deep in the Columbia River Gorge, a short drive from the Bridge of the Gods, the nation’s only government-run marijuana shop was running low on weed.

The store had been open for just a few days. Inside, manager Robyn Legun was frantically trying to restock. Outside, five customers stood waiting for the doors to open. Someone cracked a joke about this being a typical government operation, always running late.

Marijuana. It’s what’s for dinner.

It could come in the form of “pot” roast or a “rasta pasta” with cannabis-infused pesto. Or for those feeling a little too lazy to cook, a pre-made, pot-laced pizza can be baked in the time it takes to hear the first three songs on Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.”

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Thousands of people busted in Connecticut for marijuana possession now have the right to get their convictions erased after the state Supreme Court ruled Monday that the violation had been downgraded to the same legal level as a parking ticket.

The 7-0 ruling came in the case of former Manchester and Bolton resident Nicholas Menditto, who had asked for his convictions to be overturned after the Legislature decriminalized possession of small amounts of pot in 2011.

"It's a topic multiple states will have to be facing," said Aaron Romano, Menditto's attorney. "Because marijuana is being decriminalized across the United States, this issue needs to be addressed."

The Reedsport City Council voted to approve taxes on marijuana sales, when those sales become legal, but voters in the city will have to approve those taxes.

Measure 10-136 will appear on the May 19 ballot.

“Before Measure 91 passed,” Reedsport City Manager Jonathan Wright said, “the City Council passed an ordinance that would institute a tax ... 5 percent on medicinal, 10 percent on recreational. Because of the city's charter, as amended in 2010, it cannot be imposed until ratified by a vote of the people.”

MEXICO CITY — Once upon a time, Mexican marijuana was the gold standard for U.S. pot smokers. But in the new world of legal markets and gourmet weed, aficionados here are looking to the United States and Europe for the good stuff.

Instead of Acapulco Gold, Mexican smokers want strains like Liberty Haze and Moby Dick — either importing high-potency boutique pot from the United States, or growing it here in secret gardens that use techniques perfected abroad.

It’s a small but growing market in a country where cannabis is largely illegal, unlike the U.S. states of Colorado and Washington that have legalized recreational use, and others where medical marijuana is available.

Colorado has a serious pot money problem.

And it's not that it's being laundered.

The state is on track to have to refund the revenue it generates this fiscal year from two voter-approved retail marijuana taxes: the 10 percent sales tax and 15 percent excise tax were intended to pay for school building construction and the enforcement and regulation of the drug's new market.

San Diego — A group of “ganjapreneurs” looking to break into the budding business of marijuana attended the Cannabis Career Institute seminar Sunday.

Attendees shelled out about $300, which includes the cost of a state-specific text book, to attend the daylong course at a downtown hotel. The curriculum included a handful of speakers who taught different aspects of the marijuana industry — from growing the plant to starting a cannabis business, to navigating the legal and regulatory requirements for the ventures.

Many attendees came with ideas of their own.

Three of Maine’s four federally recognized Indian tribes are discussing legalizing marijuana on their lands, including at least one tribe that is considering commercial-scale production of marijuana as a way to provide jobs and income for its members, reports the Portland Press-Herald.
