Marijuana Edibles Come Under New Colorado Regulations as of October 1

The Marijuana Enforcement Division has updated Colorado laws regarding cannabis. And starting October 1, one major change will affect customers — while another affects product manufacturers.

After conducting a few studies, MED determined that the THC levels between flower, edibles and concentrates were so different that the state's regulations had to change regarding how much of each substance could be sold at one time. There's a higher level of THC in concentrates than flower, for example, so the MED didn't think customers should be able to purchase the same amount of each.

Considerations for marijuana legalization in Canada: Legal cannabis brings tax revenue for Denver, but also new expenses

From a fiscal perspective, legalizing pot seems like a win-win scenario for cities. In theory, marijuana sales tax revenue can fill gaps in the budget, while police and prosecutors spend less time and money going after residents for marijuana possession.

But Toronto city council might want to hold off on planning a spending spree — because legal marijuana costs money, too.

In Denver, the capital of a state where recreational pot sales have been legal for almost three years, much of the tax revenue from marijuana gets spent regulating the very industry that generated it.

Here’s How Many US Senators and Representatives Support Legalization

The federal government has not experienced the same increase in support for legalization as the American people.

Earlier this week, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) released its 2016 congressional scorecard, which assigns a letter grade for federally elected officials based on their stances on legalization.

In order to receive an “A,” the official must have “publicly declared his or her support for the legalization and regulation of marijuana for adults.”

Oregon Scrambling to Implement New Marijuana Rules

Officials in Oregon are working to address concerns of marijuana businesses that say delays in the state processing regulatory applications threaten chaos for the industry when new rules take effect on Saturday.

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission has scheduled an emergency meeting for Friday to discuss the matter, an agency spokesman said. Without action, medical dispensaries and recreational retail outlets may be forced to pull some products off their shelves.

Poll: California Voters Back Recreational Use Of Marijuana

California may soon become the fifth state to allow the recreational use of marijuana, according to a new KPIX 5/SurveyUSA poll released Thursday.

In the latest poll, 52 percent of those asked favored the passage of Prop. 64 – a measure that would legalize, regulate and tax the recreational use of marijuana.

Only 41 percent of those asked are opposed to the measure with 6 percent saying they were undecided and 1 percent saying they would abstain from voting on it.

The measure will allow the legal use of one ounce or less of marijuana by adults 21 and over in California. In addition, it allows adults to cultivate up to six plants for personal use in a private, enclosed space.

Denver police need more room, money to store seized marijuana since legalization

Since the legalization of recreational marijuana, the Denver Police Department has struggled to stash the weed its narcotics officers confiscate.

Now, the department is asking Denver City Council to approve $125,116 in the 2017 budget so its property bureau can handle the thousands of pounds of marijuana that comes through its doors each year.

“We’re no longer getting small amounts like we used to,” said Lt. Cliff Carney, who manages the department’s evidence section. “Instead of 15 to 20 plants grown in someone’s basement, they’re finding 1,000 to 1,500 plants in a warehouse and all the equipment that goes with it.”

MAP: See where legal marijuana will be sold around Alaska

Alaska is likely just weeks away from the state’s first legal marijuana sales, according to Cynthia Franklin, the Director of the Alcohol and Marijuana Control office.

As of Sept. 28, there are 34 marijuana businesses listed in “active status” for their licenses. These businesses are some of the closest to operating under the new regulations, but are still subject to credentialing and preliminary inspections, according to the state’s website. Once the businesses are able to operate, they’ll move into “effective status.”

See the location of those businesses in the interactive map below:
