Province announces multiple taxes on legal pot

The province has announced its markups on legal pot.

Come October, Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries will apply markups of $0.75 per gram on recreational cannabis, plus an additional nine per cent.

Retailers will have to pay, too, contributing six per cent of their revenues to a "social responsibility fee."

The province says the tax will help pay for the cost of public education, safety, health and addictions associated with the legalization of cannabis.

"The various health, safety, education and enforcement implications of legalized cannabis fall almost entirely to the provincial level of government," said Growth, Enterprise and Trade Minister Blaine Pedersen in a news release Wednesday.

As legalization nears, Canadian advisors bullish on marijuana: survey

Heading into the third quarter of 2018, Canadian advisors are most bullish on marijuana stocks, reveals the latest advisor sentiment survey from Horizons ETFs.

The marijuana sector, as represented by the North American Marijuana Index, has the highest level of bullish sentiment in the survey, with 58% of advisors expecting marijuana stocks to deliver positive returns in Q3.

The index was up 5.78% from last quarter, with much of that performance coming from the announcement that recreational marijuana will become legal in Canada on Oct. 17.

“Since this sector is such a news-driven space, many advisors may be expecting the sector to get a big bump in interest as we near the big day,” says Steve Hawkins, president and co-CEO of Horizons ETFs, in a release.

After seeing an increase of patients in his Hamilton-area emergency room who have consumed too much cannabis, one doctor hopes an education program can prevent future issues.

New users have been going to the hospital in increased numbers as legalization approaches across Canada in October.

Dr. Ira Price has been a leader in medical application of cannabinoids, and opened the first cannabis health clinic in Ontario in 2010. Since then, he has continued to call for a responsible approach to cannabis use.

Saskatoon company aims to grow and wholesale cannabis to Prairie recreational, medical markets

A Saskatoon company is betting Saskatchewan cannabis users will prefer homegrown.

It's not an idle gamble.

The walls and roof are already up on the Bold Growth Inc. building north of the airport. The company is hiring workers and checking its way through a Health Canada application to become a licensed grower.

"There's definitely some risk to it," said Bold Growth's chief operating officer Spencer Veikle.

"Your final licence isn't granted until your building is finished. But there's multiple steps in the licensing process, and we passed most of those quickly and effectively."

The company is not going into the project blind. It's working with an Ontario company called Cannabis Compliance Inc. to negotiate the Health Canada application.

Why marijuana legalization could impact cyber risk

Commercial brokers looking to place insurance for cannabis providers should be paying close attention to the information their clients keep on medical marijuana patients.

Cannabis regulations announced last week will supersede the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations once the regulations take effect this October.

What may be interesting to cyber insurance providers is the fact that cannabis companies providing medical marijuana “will have a lot of information on the clients that are users and are purchasing the cannabis,” said Richard Provost, a partner with Langlois lawyers LLP in Montreal.

Ottawa sought advice from kids to help pick cannabis warning symbol

Health Canada tapped the opinions of children as young as five years old as it attempted to decide what warning symbol would work best in mandatory labelling of cannabis products when pot is legalized later this year.

The purpose of the symbol is to "prevent accidental ingestion of products containing cannabis, in particular by children and youth," the January report to the department noted.

Earnscliffe Strategy Group won a contract worth nearly $60,000 to do focus group testing in three locations — Toronto, Vancouver and Quebec City.

The consultants interviewed children between the ages of five and nine, spoke with 10- to 12-year-olds and did focus groups with teens and adults.

The council voted 13-3 in favour of the so-called Nuisance bylaws.

The bylaw proposal said the legalization of cannabis would create nuisances from odours related to smoking and plant cultivation.

Restrictions apply to pot, tobacco and vaping

These restrictions will apply to pot, tobacco and vaping. Fines will range from $25 to $2,000.

As Cannabis Sales Are Set To Start – GTEC Holdings Is Cornering The Most Profitable Market

The Canadian marijuana market continue its torrid pace – but if it follows the path of breweries it’s the niche craft market where the money will be made.

A Brief Primer on the Craft Marijuana Market

There is no denying that the marijuana market in Canada is going to be big. . .

By 2020, we believe that the market for legal cannabis use will hit $7.5 billion in sales.

To put this figure into perspective – the Canadian brewery industry currently has sales of $9.2 billion.

The breweries industry is looked at as mature, which means major M&A activity and slow growth. For instance, sales are expected to grow at an annualized rate of only 2.2% over the decade.
