Marijuana stocks up after Ontario announces cannabis supply agreements

Some marijuana sector stocks are up slightly after Ontario announced supply agreements with 26 licensed producers in preparation for legalization of recreational pot this fall.

Smaller producers which signed initial agreements with the Ontario Cannabis Store, which will be selling pot online starting on Oct. 17, saw bigger lifts in the volatile sector.

Shares of licensed producer Beleave Inc. were up roughly 16 per cent to $1.55 in Toronto while Newstrike Brands Ltd.'s stock was up more than 21 per cent to $0.67.

Ontario announced late Monday that it had signed agreements with 26 licensed producers such as Canopy Growth Corp., Aurora Cannabis and Aphria Inc. as well as smaller players including Starseed Medicinal Inc. and Solace Health Inc.

New pot policy in the works for University of Guelph

The University of Guelph is working on a smoke-free policy for campus.

It will include consultations with students, staff and faculty, and part of that conversation will include talking about cannabis, which becomes legal on October 22.

Don O'Leary, vice president of administration and finance, said the school is creating a new no-smoking policy, which will prohibit the smoking of all tobacco and cannabis products on campus or in student residences.  "We're going through a public process here with stakeholders," O'Leary told CBC K-W. He also said they would "step up" the public consultations in fall when students are back at school.

Can cannabis contribute to improving women's sex lives?

For years, Kinleigh Stewart thought she was asexual. On the rare occasion the 27-year-old from Sarnia, Ont., had sex, she mostly felt anxious – a fact she attributes to early traumatic experiences related to sex – and preoccupied. “I’d think about what groceries I had to buy, if I needed to vacuum. I hated it … It put me in a crippling position,” she said. In the past year, however, Stewart has discovered that she can enjoy sex. It’s just that, in order to do so, she has to be high.

Uber-style cannabis delivery service hopes to launch in Edmonton, Calgary

An Edmonton business hopes to cash in on the lucrative cannabis market by launching an Uber-style delivery service for medical and recreational users. But whether the business will be allowed to operate in Alberta is still up in the air.

Called Save the Drive, the business is set to launch a mobile application when cannabis becomes legal Oct. 17.

CEO Chanel Graham sees a need for the service among medical users who are homebound, can't drive, or among recreational users who are intoxicated and unable to drive.

"This is something that would be needed and in demand in Canada," Graham said. "And it's something that we can offer to keep drivers off the road."

Ontario Cannabis Store announces supply agreements with 26 licensed producers for online sales

The online retailer says it will sell a variety of products, including dried flower, cannabis oil and cannabis seeds, when pot becomes legal on Oct. 17. The Ontario Cannabis Store says it has partnered with 26 licensed producers for its online retail platform.

The store, which will be Ontario’s only online retailer when recreational marijuana is legalized in the fall, said Monday that the supply agreements with Health Canada-authorized producers were competitive. The online retailer says it will sell a variety of products, including dried flower, cannabis oil and cannabis seeds, to customers 19 and older when pot becomes legal on Oct. 17.

Ontario's grey-market cannabis businesses chart paths to regulation

Business-owner Don Briere says he is about to secure leases on several storefronts across Toronto to fuel an aggressive expansion of his B.C.-based Weeds Glass and Gifts chain, which lists four locations as currently operating in Ottawa and Vancouver.

Ontario’s dispensary operators are facing an existential dilemma: Shut down in the hopes of securing a coveted cannabis retail licence from the province by next April or continue selling a drug they say should be made easily available now more than ever.

Privacy issue with online cannabis sales needs watching after legalization, experts say

Buyers who have to provide personal information to purchase recreational pot online after legalization this fall should be able to rely on existing laws to protect their privacy but the issue needs to be watched closely to ensure regulations are obeyed and mistakes are avoided, experts say.

The matter is important given the stigma many people still attach to cannabis use, and the potential for Canadians to be barred from the United States if their otherwise legal indulgence becomes known to American border agents.

'We're the mice on that track': Bar owners brace for cannabis legalization

Can you tell if someone is high?

Jim Bence says this is the question troubling bar owners across the province as the legalization of cannabis on Oct. 17 looms over the industry.

People who serve booze in Saskatchewan must now take a mandatory training course called "Serve It Right" on how to spot someone who is too drunk to be served more liquor.

In two months, another intoxicant will be added to the mix.

"We need to have some information and some guidelines as to what the responsibilities will be for us to recognize impairment from a grander perspective, not just from alcohol," said Bence, who is president of the Saskatchewan Hotel and Hospitality Association.

Aurora Cannabis Inc (TSX:ACB) vs. Canopy Growth Corp (TSX:WEED): Provincial Supply Agreements

The marijuana market battles for the control of the biggest market share in the Canadian adult use market are still raging on, with the country’s most populous province, Ontario, yet to announce any cannabis supply agreements with the warring licensed producers (LPs), but winners and losers are already emerging before the war is over, with seven provinces and one territory having announced supply agreements with selected LPs so far. In its recent quarterly financial results earnings release on August 14, Canopy Growth (TSX:WEED)(NYSE:CGC) co-CEO Bruce Linton is quoted saying, “with an estimated 36% of the total supply committed to date…
