BC to have only one store selling cannabis on first day of legalization

On the morning of Oct. 17, British Columbians shouldn’t expect to wake up and see marijuana stores opening their doors.

At least that’s the message from the province’s minister of public safety and solicitor general, Mike Farnworth.

In a news release issued Sunday, Farnworth said the government’s first and only BC Cannabis Store will open in Kamloops and more retail locations are “anticipated” in the following months, with over 100 paid applications in various stages of entry.

The government is also hoping to launch an online sales platform to ensure British Columbians can purchase non-medical cannabis regardless of where they live, he said.

How will the legalization of cannabis affect athletes? It's hard to say

While there’s been plenty of discussion around the pending legalization of cannabis, its effect on athletes hasn’t been part of the conversation. One of the reasons for the absence of dialogue is marijuana’s reputation for impairing, not improving athletic performance, which makes cannabis a poor workout partner.

Canadian police could be allowed to consume cannabis during off-hours

If the newly published cannabis regulations for the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) are any indication of what things will look like for other police agencies across Canada, then off-duty officers will be allowed to consume cannabis just like they can enjoy an alcoholic beverage in their spare time once recreational marijuana becomes legal on October 17

Class is in session at Canada's first 'pot school'

The school year may be two weeks old, but there's still a buzz at one college in southern Ontario over a program not available anywhere else in the country.

"I never thought five years ago, maybe even two years ago, that we'd be here in this classroom starting a course on commercial cannabis production," said professor Bill MacDonald.

MacDonald is the head of Niagara's College's new cannabis program. On the first day of school, he not only had students huddled around him, but also reporters and cameras.

The root of the excitement is that Canada is just over a month away from making pot legal for recreational use, and licensed cannabis producers across the country are hiring greenhouse staff as they ramp up operations.

Medical marijuana users may seek ‘alternative’ sources in event of Canada Post work stoppage, Canopy Growth says

Canada’s largest licensed producer of medical marijuana says a work stoppage at Canada Post could leave many of its customers without their medications, resulting in some looking for unregulated, black market sources of cannabis to fill the void.

“What ends up happening is that people either go without their medicine or they find an alternative source,” said Jordan Sinclair, vice president of communications at Canopy Growth Corp.

“Those are the choices people have. There is no other legal means of getting cannabis in Canada, aside from through the mail.” The company has written to Canada Post and federal Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor as it prepares contingency plans for a possible strike or lockout at the Crown agency.

Brace for 'scary down days' in cannabis stocks, marijuana fund manager warns

Brace for 'scary down days' in cannabis stocks, marijuana fund manager warns.

The manager of the first Canadian mutual fund focused exclusively on marijuana has some advice for investors: Get ready for some more “scary down days.”

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a steep, sharp pullback, which will scare all the people that got in late, have a little bit of consolidation and then we start the next phase up,” said Bruce Campbell, founder of StoneCastle Investment Management Inc., which has about $150 million (US$115 million) in assets.

Border protection official warns that Canadian cannabis workers and investors risk lifetime ban from the U.S.

A top official of the U.S. Customs Border Protection confirmed Wednesday that anyone working or investing in Canada’s cannabis industry will be treated as if they are an illegal drug trafficker.

Despite that Canada will have legal cannabis nationwide in a month, and that a majority of states have legalized cannabis to some extent, the plant remains illegal at the federal level. The U.S. government views foreigners working in the marijuana industry the same way they would someone working for an illegal drug cartel or as a dealer, regardless of their home nation’s laws.

University of Alberta lays out new cannabis rules, including designated consumption areas

The University of Alberta is embracing Canada’s legalization of cannabis.

For many colleges and universities, the idea of cannabis on campus is a nonstarter. Where cannabis laws don’t expressly forbid consumption or possession of marijuana at schools, school administrators have set clear policies prohibiting them.

In the United States, these bans are so strict that they often prevent students with illness from bringing and taking their medicine at school, and have thus prompted legal challenges. In Canada, however, universities are taking a more progressive approach.
