Edmonton's NorQuest College preparing for online programming in hemp farming

Now that cannabis has been legalized, it's hoped that the suspicion surrounding hemp production is on the way out with the general public.

In reality, agricultural organizations have no problem with hemp and would be happy to see more production as well as processing facilites.

Canada's rocky legal-marijuana rollout has been plagued by product shortages, out-of-control lines, and distribution issues — and people are turning to the black market

Canada officially legalized marijuana on October 17, but Canadians across the country have had a tough time getting their hands on the product — legally, that is.

Patrick and Michael, 26, roommates in downtown Toronto, have had a somewhat typical post-legalization experience. (Their last names withheld because they purchased marijuana illegally.)

‘I was the guinea pig’: B.C. pot shop owner says cannabis licensing process wasn’t easy

Kimberley was the first community in British Columbia to grant business licences to two medical marijuana dispensaries, Tamarack Dispensaries and Earth’s Own Naturals.

Now, Tamarack Cannabis Boutique will be the first retail cannabis store in the province to be granted a licence from the provincial government. They received it on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018. And Earth’s Own will also be receiving their business licence, says owner Laurie Weitzel.

The process requires security screening and financial integrity checks, support from the local government or First Nation and a store inspection.

More people smoking pot in public, says Regina police chief

Regina's top cop says there's been no big increase in impaired driving now that it's legal to smoke cannabis, but more people are smoking in public.

"We have seen a lot of consumption in public. We have not done any enforcement, we've done a lot of education and a lot of communication with regard to that," Evan Bray said.

"I actually had a personal encounter with an individual the other day. It was a very positive one. The individual actually had a medical purpose for consumption and was able to show the documentation of that."

Bray said he hasn't seen an overall shift in how people behave.

He said some people caught smoking recreationally in public said they didn't know the rules, while others were willfully breaking them.

It's official, Canadians have been denied entry to the United States after admitting to smoking weed

Less than two weeks after weed was legalized in Canada, it's already been reported that Canadians have been denied from entering the United States because of admitted cannabis use. Canadians that have smoked weed previously have been worried about getting banned from the United States after legalization.

Roy Ludwig, the mayor of Estevan, Saskatchewan is speaking up after he says that multiple Canadian residents have been turned away from the U.S. border on the premise of previous pot use. The Canadian town is situated close to the border crossing of North Dakota, where marijuana use is still illegal.

Molson Coors readies to sell cannabis-infused beverages in Canada next year

Molson Coors Brewing Co. expects to "secure a meaningful share" of the cannabis-infused beverage market when edibles are legalized in Canada, the company's CEO said.

"We will be in a ready-to-go position and, you know, one of the first on the playing field as the market opens up," said Mark R. Hunter in a conference call with analysts after the company released its third-quarter earnings report Wednesday.

Recreational cannabis products such as dried flower and pre-rolled joints became available for legal purchase in Canada on Oct. 17, but edibles won't be legalized until next year.

B.C. issues first recreational cannabis shop licence in Kimberley

A pot shop in Kimberley, B.C., has received the first private licence to sell recreational marijuana from the British Columbia government, two weeks after the drug became legal across the country.

Tamarack Cannabis Boutique can legally begin selling non-medical marijuana Thursday but it will be up to the company to decide when to open for business.

The Ministry of the Attorney General says in a statement that additional retail store licences will be issued as applicants proceed through the process.

It says the process requires security screening and financial integrity checks, support from the local government or First Nation and a store inspection.

Supply shortages plague Canada's new cannabis marketplace

The name of the store is High North, but it might as well be named High and Dry because for all but about four hours of the first two weeks since marijuana was legalized in Canada, there was no pot to sell.

Trevor Tobin, one of the owners of the Labrador City shop in Newfoundland and Labrador, said they went 10 straight days without supply.

“The producers keep saying there will be some bumps in the road, but right now it’s not a bump in the road. It’s a big pothole,” he said.

How Lesotho became an unlikely hotspot for Canadian cannabis companies

Navdeep Dhaliwal was surprised when he first stepped foot in Lesotho last January — the climate was temperate, the landscape was lush, and the first footprints of a legal medical marijuana system were already in place.

“A close friend in the industry put me in touch with guys in Lesotho. So I went to meet with them, and I was really very surprised and impressed by the operation they had going there,” said Dhaliwal, president of Canadian licensed producer Supreme Cannabis.
