Neighbourhood pot dealers cheaper than government, StatsCannabis says

Illegal cannabis dealers still hold a price advantage over licensed government pot shops, federal statistics show.

As of March 31, the national average price of cannabis from all sources was $8.04 per gram. Legal cannabis was $9.99 on average compared to an average illicit price of $6.37.

Those averages are from the period since October’s legalization.

Statistics Canada, informally known as StatCan, began collecting data early last year through StatsCannabis. That’s an online hub including a crowd-sourcing platform to gather information about national cannabis use, including how much Canadians are paying, the quantity and quality, reasons for buying and average usage and consumption.

Cannabis package recycling rolled out Canada-wide

Tweed, a subsidiary of Smiths Falls-based cannabis producer Canopy Growth, partnered with TerraCycle, an American recycling company, to introduce the first Canada-wide cannabis packaging recycling program, the companies announced Monday.

Many cannabis consumers have long complained about the packaging that ends up in the landfill as a result of Health Canada’s rules requiring pot producers to package products in tamper-proof and child-resistant containers that prevent contamination.

The packaging can be deposited at J. London at 691 Richmond St. and Central Cannabis at 666 Wonderland Rd., two of the more than 100 bricks-and-mortar cannabis retail outlets participating in the program.

Hamilton’s first legal pot shop

It’s a historic day for the City of Hamilton, as the first legal marijuana store opened its doors this morning.

Hundreds waited in line around the building throughout the day to get their cannabis products just in time for 4-20 celebrations.

As the weed ribbon was cut, customers who were lining up in the rain, poured into Canna Cabana on Barton Street this morning.

It’s a bright, open concept store, with locked glass displays filled with government approved cannabis products. Consultants were on hand to help. There are glass canisters on display so that customers can see the plant, and smell it.

Canadian retailer opens cannabis clinic in Australia

Canadian retailer Compass Lifestyle Clinic has opened up a dispensary in Sydney in a bid to capitalize on the underserved Australian patient demand for medicinal marijuana.

Compass was only founded last year, but it has already opened two clinics in British Columbia and six in Alberta. Another six Alberta clinics are coming soon, which will significantly boost its presence in Calgary and Edmonton.

Marijuana activists and enthusiasts gather for annual Edmonton 420 celebration

The sound of drums was steady and a "skunky" odour hung in the air Saturday afternoon at the Alberta Legislature.

Medicinal and recreational users alike marked the day popularized by cannabis enthusiasts. Around 400 people gathered for the yearly rally outside of the Alberta Legislature, much less than the crowd of more than 1,000 at last year's festivities.

Marijuana legalization may have happened in October but that didn't stop the annual 420 rally at the legislature because some say the fight is not over yet.

Kenneth Kirk, the leader of the Alberta Marijauna Party, says parties like his are more relevant than ever despite legalization as the laws are disjointed across Canada.

Yukon's 1st private pot retailer now open, in time for 4/20

The first privately-owned cannabis retail store in the North opened on Thursday morning in downtown Whitehorse.

Triple J's Canna Space received its licence from Yukon's Cannabis Licensing Board on Wednesday, the day owners Jordi Mikeli-Jones and Jeremy Jones originally hoped to open.

But they were all smiles on Wednesday as they received a copy of their licence, and added some finishing touches to their Wood Street store.

Their goal was to open in time for Saturday, which is 4/20 — a day that's become associated with celebrations of cannabis culture.

Cannabis websites in US and Canada crash on biggest 4/20 day

Global cannabis suppliers struggled to keep up with demand on Saturday, the biggest ever 4/20 Day, an annual celebration of marijuana on 20 April, which in the US calendar is referred to as 4/20.

Suppliers in the US, where recreational cannabis is legal in 10 states, and Canada, where the drug was decriminalised for recreational use last year, reported difficulties fulfilling orders on what has been called the industry’s Black Friday.

Pot's been legal for 6 months. So what?

Wednesday marks six months since the province of Ontario became our first legal pot dealer.

Recreational marijuana use became legal in Canada on Oct 17, and the online Ontario Cannabis Store opened for business the same day, not always to glowing reviews.

It would be another five and a half months before Ottawa's first licensed bricks-and-mortar pot shops opened their doors.

Gatineau's first store is expected to open at the Centre La Gappe in late spring or early summer.

60% of British Columbians favour cannabis testing at work: poll

British Columbians are satisfied with how the province has managed its part in the legalization of cannabis in the six months since the laws changed, but feel it can go one step further with drug testing at work, according to a new poll.

The poll, administered by Vancouver-based Research Co., suggests most people in B.C. (79 per cent) were satisfied with the government’s decision to establish 19 years as the legal age to purchase, sell or consume marijuana and restrict smoking to areas where tobacco is allowed.

Sixty per cent of respondents said employers should now be able to administer drug testing to any employee. Residents over the age of 55 strongly supported this idea (68 per cent).
