Oregon medical marijuana patient says edibles more effective than smoking for pain relief

Severe arthritis has taken a toll on Susan Lind-Kanne.

The 59-year-old's knees, back, shoulder and even her toes ache. Her fingers bend awkwardly, making it impossible to lift a smooth water glass. Her hands can only grasp mugs with handles.

When the pain is too much, she resorts to Vicodin. The rest of the time she relies on cannabis-infused candies.

Her favorites: cherry blaster, cherry cola and watermelon flavored Gummiez, small candies popular on Oregon's medical marijuana market.

Gummiez are sold according to potency. Lind-Kanne sticks mostly with ones that contain 10 milligrams of THC, since it's pain relief she's after, not a high. Depending on how she feels, she sometimes opts for the candies with 25 milligrams.

How the American opiate epidemic was started by one pharmaceutical company

The state of Kentucky may finally get its deliverance. After more than seven years of battling the evasive legal tactics of Purdue Pharma, 2015 may be the year that Kentucky and its attorney general, Jack Conway, are able to move forward with a civil lawsuit alleging that the drugmaker misled doctors and patients about their blockbuster pain pill OxyContin, leading to a vicious addiction epidemic across large swaths of the state.

Committee approves bill to decriminalize marijuana in New Hampshire

New Hampshire may soon join other New England states in loosening the law when it comes to marijuana possession.

The Committee on Criminal Justice voted overwhelmingly Thursday to support a measure making it a violation, rather than a criminal offense, to possess a half-ounce or less of marijuana.

Under current law, possession of an ounce of marijuana or less is a Class A misdemeanor that carries with it a possible year in jail, but some believe that when it comes to societal problems, there are bigger fish to fry.

"We should be better spending our limited time and resources, and on top of that, the New Hampshire Constitution says the penalty ought to fit the crime," said Rep. Adam Shroadter, R-Newmarket.

PharmaCann gets latest Illinois license to grow medical marijuana

Ilinois regulators Monday awarded a medical marijuana growing license to PharmaCann LLC, to replace a firm that gave up its license in the northwestern part of the state.

The approval means that PharmaCann, based in Oak Park, has won approval for two grow centers and four dispensaries statewide, more than any other business in the state.

Green Thumb Industries LLC gave up its license to grow marijuana in Dixon last week after it didn't come up with the required $2 million surety bond or escrow account and the $200,000 permit fee. Local officials said Green Thumb, which also has licenses to operate two other grow centers, expressed concerns about the cost of the license while only about 1,000 patients have been approved to get medical marijuana.

Menace to medicine – revisiting cannabis

The medicinal use of cannabis is a complex issue not just in Australia but around the world. In the past year media coverage has exploded in Australia.

This has been stoked largely by a public campaign by Lucy and Lou Haslam, parents of 24-year-old Daniel Haslam, a patient terminal cancer from Tamworth, NSW and the political and media support for their predicament. Now barely a week passes without an emotive anecdotal success story, an outspoken medical practitioner supporting or decrying its use, or governments announcing trials, investigations or priority for the issue.

A majority favors marijuana legalization for first time, according to nation's most authoritative survey

For the first time, the General Social Survey -- a large, national survey conducted every two years and widely considered to represent the gold standard for public opinion research -- shows a majority of Americans favoring the legalization of marijuana.

In interviews conducted between March and October of last year -- when the legal marijuana markets in Colorado and Washington were ramping up -- researchers asked 1,687 respondents the following question: "Do you think the use of marijuana should be made legal or not?"

Fifty-two percent said pot should be legalized, 42 percent opposed it, and another 7 percent were undecided. Support is up 9 percentage points from 2012, the last time the survey was conducted.
