Wiley: One Family's Journey Into the Promise of Cannabis Medicine

My son Wiley suffered from infantile spasms, a type of refractory seizure. Through the use of Cannabidiol (CBD) rich cannabis oil we cured his epilepsy outright. Since that time his energy has doubled, his development has blossomed, and I get to see just how a toddler should be. Wiley is running and playing, tearing up the house faster than I can fix it.

Perspective: Close the knowledge gap

Nations with cannabis programmes should respond to a lack of research. Canada can be a leader, say Jonathan Page and Mark Ware.

When it comes to medical cannabis, Canada is both a leader and a laggard. Policy-wise, Canada is ahead of many other countries, having had federal regulations that allow patients to access herbal cannabis (dried leaves and flowers) with a doctor's authorization since 2001. Based on this early entry into medical cannabis, one would expect Canada to be at the forefront of research. Alas, this is not the case. As the number of patients accessing cannabis-based therapies has increased, research has not expanded. The opportunity to inform medical cannabis policy is slipping away.

Denver health officials issue food safety advisory for marijuana pills

Denver health officials have issued a food safety advisory for RX Green's "Autopilot" capsules, a marijuana-infused product.

The city's health department says any of the manufacturer's Omega-3 and THC pills made before Sept. 17 should be discarded. The products have a license number of 404R-00109 on their package.

"The advisory is due to concerns regarding the manufacturing process and lack of temperature controls in place to prevent bacterial growth," Denver's Department of Environmental Health said in an advisory on Friday. "There have been no reports of illness at this time."

"This advisory has been issued as a result of a food safety inspection."

The health department says RX Green, based in Aspen, has not issued a recall.

Three months in, cannabis users complain of high costs, difficult access

Nearly 90 days since medical cannabis became legal to sell in Minnesota, the young industry is working through some growing pains. While a number of patients express vast improvements in their quality of life after using cannabis, others complain of high costs and trouble getting the drug.

So far, the state has registered 518 patients and 404 health care practitioners. The most common condition among those patients is muscle spasms, followed by seizures and cancer.

But not all approved patients have actually purchased medical cannabis.

Rep. Pat Garofalo, R-Farmington, who sits on the Minnesota Medical Cannabis Task Force, said the law has created even more hurdles for patients suffering from chronic conditions.

Medical Benefits of Marijuana Unclear

Researchers at the University of Bristol, UK, have carried out an analysis of dozens of trials of the medical benefits of cannabis or marijuana.

Dr. Penny Whiting and her team looked at 79 randomized trials including 6,462 participants. Overall, this contained “moderate-quality evidence” to support the use of cannabinoids (chemical compounds that are the active principles in cannabis or marijuana) for chronic pain or spasticity due to multiple sclerosis.

Chronic Pain: Herbal Cannabis Showed No Serious Adverse Effects After One-Year Use

There is not yet enough clinical evidence suggesting that cannabis is effective for self-management of pain. Some short-duration trials have shown efficacy, whereas other studies have shown little improvement over placebo. Effective or not, however, cannabis continues to be widely used as a self-management strategy by patients with a wide range of symptoms and diseases. A study in The Journal of Pain suggests that such use over a one-year period did not increase patients’ risk of serious adverse events. This was a prospective cohort study in Canada to describe safety issues among subjects with chronic non-cancer pain, with a participant base of 216 individuals with chronic pain. A standardized herbal cannabis product (12.5% THC) was dispensed to eligible subjects for one year.
