If you’re looking to give up marijuana and possibly cigarettes as well, a group of researchers at the University of Washington would like to hear from you.

The Innovative Programs Research Group, an organization in the UW School of Social Work, is recruiting people 18 and older for a free marijuana and tobacco treatment trial. The study is aimed at adults who are regularly using both substances, want to quit marijuana and are willing to consider kicking the tobacco habit as well.

Pennsylvania legalizes medical marijuana today after lawmakers gave the state’s groundbreaking bill its final round of votes.

After bouncing around between the Senate and the House over the past few months, the final version of the bill received the last round of votes it needed earlier this afternoon.

Yesterday, the Pennsylvania Senate voted 42-7 in favor of the bill. And today, the Pennsylvania House gave it another overwhelmingly positive vote of 149-46.

Now that it’s officially been passed by both sets of lawmakers, the bill is being given to Governor Tom Wolf to be signed into law.

As Pennsylvania legalizes medical marijuana, it becomes the 24th state in the U.S. to do so.

There has been talk in recent times of medicinal cannabis being legalised in Australia and some have been waiting with bated breath for the announcement. 

And the Victorian government has finally passed its bill, with some people now able to manufacture and consume the drug.

Victoria is the first state in Australia to legalise medicinal cannabis, with a cultivation trial about to get underway.

But how exactly does it work and what does it mean for you?

WHAT IS MEDICINAL CANNABIS?

It stems from the drug, marijuana, which is made up of cannabinoids and many believe it can be used to treat chronic illnesses or alleviate symptoms.

New Jersey, where property, corporate and income taxes are among the highest in the U.S., now can also claim the nation’s most expensive medical marijuana. Governor Chris Christie, who has railed against the state’s cost of living, says pricey pot is fine with him.

The second-term Republican, who has called the cannabis-therapy movement a “front for legalization,” says he’ll block Democratic lawmakers’ latest efforts to broaden the list of conditions eligible for treatment. The program’s restrictions are causing the state to miss out on millions of dollars in tax revenue, sponsors say.

Each medical marijuana company in New York is allowed to produce up to five different strains of the drug. The oils, tinctures and capsules are generally labeled by different colors or brand names, and, in some cases, both.

ALBANY - Citing flaws in the state's current rules, advocates for medical marijuana traveled to the state Capitol on Tuesday to push lawmakers to support loosening New York's restrictions.

The advocates joined with Assemblyman Richard Gottfried, D-Manhattan, to push for a series of changes to the state's program, including a bill that would allow nurse practitioners and physician assistants to recommend cannabis-based medications.

ENVER — Colorado schools would be forced to allow students to use medical cannabis under a bill that cleared its first hurdle Monday at the state Legislature.

The bill updates a new law that gives school districts the power to permit medical marijuana treatments for students under certain conditions. Patient advocates call the law useless because none of Colorado's 178 school districts currently allows such use.

"This is not about two kids smoking a joint between cars in a parking lot," said Jennie Stormes, mother of a teenage boy suspended from school last year for having yogurt mixed with cannabis pills to treat a disease that gives him seizures.

Some of New York’s top doctors spent countless hours last year examining Andrew Greenspan.

His constant pain and dangerously high fevers had them baffled. At one point, they quarantined him in fear of tropical diseases.

A team of neurologists finally cracked the medical mystery: Greenspan, then 23, had a rare mix of autism, spinal injuries and other illnesses with bleak treatment options.

When a risky spinal surgery failed last year, he launched an uncertain regimen of painkillers and other drugs, while dreading his next emergency room trip.
